Ever wanted to know how to successfully kill a franchise? Well now you can in 10 easy steps...
1. Shove your once likable lead down the audiences throat until they annoy the piss out of everybody. Maybe you can turn that lead into a self-parody of what they once were.
2. Turn a supporting cast of decent characters into characters that are even more annoying as that lead. A shrieking female would work the most.
3. Trade good CGI and set pieces for a good script instead of even attempting trying to balance both out.
4. Put too much into the story and too many characters to put up with, keep up with, or even care about.
5. Plot holes… -
Shoot him and cut out his tongue, then shoot his tongue! And trim that scraggly beard!
-Jack SparrowI could probably cut and paste my review for Dead Man's Chest and have to change very little. They were filmed back to back and the tone carries over from one to the next. I guess that is one downfall of doing sequels in such a manner, no matter how the first one out the door is criticized it's too late to do much about what comes next.
While Curse of the Black Pearl certainly had twists and double crosses after every turn, it still felt somewhat straightforward. I think the key there was that you only had Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp)…

As lavish blockbusters go, Pirates 3 is up there with the best of them. A budget that could support a small country for 100 years ensured At Worlds End looked stunning, all state of the art CGI, sets and make up.
It also contains a few moments of brevity that bring a wry smile to the face (a midget firing a HUUUUGE gun and being blown backwards is always good for a laugh), but those are few and far between.
Pirates 3's biggest problem is that it has no identity except that of closing around 1000 character arcs, and despite the above feels hollow when it's doing it.
9 pieces of 8 are introduced. Something about the summoning of pirate…

Holy shit that was awful. I just wanted all of them to die (which is of course impossible since they have worse death rules than Dragon Ball).

Not as good as the 2nd film.

I saw this in the cinema.
It was so long and arduous it sometimes feels like I'm still there watching it.
Just awful

The more I see this film, the better I believe it is and the more I see its replay value. Too much of a good thing is bad, to be sure, but there is some good Hollywood film-making here.

Too long, too convoluted, too much everything.

EDIT: Upon second viewing, I found it even more enjoyable and determined my comments were a bit too harsh. I still stand by my criticisms, but most of them, especially the running time and pacing, didn't distract me nearly as much as the first time around.

Somebody asked me for a one-word review of Pirates 3. The problem is, I can't really do that. Because if I absolutely had to, that word would be "bloated." But accurate as it is, it's way too negative. I liked the movie - I really did; and I think I'll like it even more upon a second viewing, when I can better digest and follow everything. There are some amazing sequences in it,… -
Pirates and Keira Knightly whatever.

Even the plot holes have plot holes.

the longest movie

The fun is gone, and any sense of excitement among the creators and the cast can't be found.

Just as convoluted as everyone says it is. I kept thinking-- this is essentially a film aimed toward kids, or at least younger viewers. How can they be expected to keep track of all these storylines?
