Pitch Black
2000 Directed by David Twohy, Carolynne Cunningham
Synopsis
Don't be afraid of the dark. Be afraid of what's in the dark
After crash-landing on a seemingly lifeless planet, pilot Carolyn Fry and the remaining passengers -- including murderer Riddick and policeman William J. Johns -- encounter an army of creatures whose only weakness is light. As night approaches and the aliens emerge, the passengers must rely on Riddick's powerful night vision to lead them through the darkness.

Ah, it's my old friend again: "Smart, Low Budget, Sci-Fi B-Movie." How excellent for you to pop up again.

I've just watched this film for the third time since it's release. On mute. Yep, not a peep from young Vin or lovely Radha, not a note of Graeme Revell's pleasingly sparse score. I watched it on mute whilst listening to a few 'mix tapes' on Spotify and you know what, it works....
Granted having to rely on Cole Hauser mugging or Keith David looking surprised to get the jist of what's going on is a bit of a risk but it's a simple story told very well, shot in a surprisingly straight-forward, efficient way.
There's a lot of strength in the visuals: Riddick's eyes glinting; the two suns on the scorched planet; the effective nasties in the darkness (notes… -
Not bad for a TV-movie.

Vin Diesel is a pretty damn good actor. Don't listen to people who tell you otherwise.

Seeing the new Riddick trailer today inspired me to watch Pitch Black for the first time. Until now I only knew the character from watching Chronicles of Riddick a few years ago.
Now Pitch Black positively surprised me. It's a nice little sci fi thriller with some horror edges, a solid cast and I kinda forgot that in 2000 they still knew how to shoot dark scenes were you can see shit.
Vin Diesel is the highlight here being funny, scary and a quite charismatic mass of bald muscle whereas Radha Mitchell is like the on screen viewer partly fascinated, partly afraid of Riddick.
Pitch Black uses a lot of heavy saturated images to make the desert locations look as…

Finally re-watched the first film that I ever saw on DVD. Ah, those were the days, disconnecting a desktop PC in one room, bringing it through to the front room and connecting it back up to the TV, struggling with a wireless keyboard to start the DVD playing software from memory as the desktop wouldn't output to the TV... ahhh...
Anyways, the film. Distinctly low budget and B-movie to me (was CGI really as bad as this in 2000, or is it just this film?) but that doesn't matter. This is a solid movie with a great performance from Vin Diesel in the lead role as a bad-ass prisoner with a hidden (almost) heart. Best shot is the guy spitting out alcohol over a lighter to see himself surrounded by the monsters about to eat him...

(note: the blu-ray version looks AMAZING)

I don't really know what to make of this movie. It's well made enough, but really God Damned Dull.

Vin Diesel was cool in this.

"Pitch Black" is pretty average in every way, but a decent enough watch.
I remember liking this better back in the day; it hasn't really aged the greatest. Kind of like a Syfy movie of the week with a bigger budget.

I made my high school boyfriend watch this cause I thought it was so great.
