Police Academy
1984 Directed by Hugh Wilson
Synopsis
What an Institution!
New rules enforced by the Lady Mayoress mean that sex, weight, height and intelligence need no longer be a factor for joining the Police Force. This opens the floodgates for all and sundry to enter the Police Academy, much to the chagrin of the instructors. Not everyone is there through choice, though. Social misfit Mahoney has been forced to sign up as the only alternative to a jail sentence and it doesn't take long before he falls foul of the boorish Lieutenant Harris. But before long, Mahoney realises that he is enjoying being a police cadet and decides he wants to stay... while Harris decides he wants Mahoney out!

Fuck the critics! Destroy the system! Burn the world!
There is a select band of films that are given an absolute ton of shit reviews when they are released but end up slowly changing the minds and opinions of the critics when they realise that they are adored by the public at large. Police Academy was one such film.
It was absolutely crapped on by almost everyone in the press when it was first released. Roger Ebert was especially harsh - "It's really something. It's so bad, maybe you should pool your money and draw straws and send one of the guys off to rent it so that in the future, whenever you think you're sitting through a bad comedy,…

Michael Winslow's character isn't funny or endearing. Basically he's insane and totally unstable. There's something menacing about attacking yourself in the bathroom while making electric razor noises.

Nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. Surprisingly hasn't dated badly at all.
It's just a pity all the sequels are bollocks.

I loved this film (and series) as a kid and i love it even more now. Even though I've seen it countless times, it still always leaves me roaring with laughter. sod the critics of this series, this is absolutely brilliant, and I can pretty much guarantee ill still be laughing at those gags in another 10-15 years.

As an 8-year-old, I thought that Michael Winslow was the greatest talent the world had ever seen.

It's a cult classic comedy, though a bit outdated today.

Realno jako zabavno. Kvalitetan humor čak. Pokoja cica. Nemoguće ne gledati ako naletiš na televiziji, ko što se meni dogodilo :(

Some films are best left in the memory.

I loved the Police Academy movies as a kid and the first one pretty much still holds up with a mixture of raunchy dialogue and great situation comedy. Too bad it almost completely falls apart in the third act.

This movie brings up so, so many questions. Like, what is wrong with Larvelle Jones? What compels him to make all these noises? And why does he sit alone in a room, knowing that nobody is watching him, and make noises to pretend he's playing a video game? Why is Hightower placed among the 'reject' group of candidates? Why is Tackleberry for some reason playing a saxophone at a party? There's no band backing him up - not even Jones on fake harmonica.
Aside from the weird stuff that just doesn't make sense, this movie is a lot less funny than I remember, probably because the lowbrow stuff isn't as appealing to me anymore. I mean, the funniest thing to…
