Movies about/starring women and girls of all ages. I originally started this list just as a reference for myself, but…
She only dated men with money... until she met a man with a heart.
A beautiful young gold-digger mistakes a lowly hotel clerk as a rich and therefore worthwhile catch.
My partner sometimes wants to watch romcoms. Except she (correctly) hates all British or American ones.
Due to this, we ended up watching Hors De Prix (Priceless) and it was just so much better than I was expecting. Fun, anarchic and mostly just quite silly. Thoroughly enjoyable and not as instantly forgettable as a Richard Curtis movie.
Priceless is a film that I would never have seen if it wasn’t for a strange thing me and a friend do. I basically am given a random film from the massive video hound book to watch and alas, Priceless it was. It actually took me a while to get around to it, as a French romantic comedy didn’t really appeal on paper. But it’s actually a pretty solid little film.
The two leads are great, though I did find it hard to warm to the girl at any point as she is just a money hungry bitch. We are meant to somewhat come to like her by the end of the film, but I could never see past her…
Audrey Tautou é sempre encantadora.
gold digging and scamming 101 👌
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
So a gold digger mistakenly thinks a waiter is a rich guy, he goes along with it because he gets to sleep with a pretty girl.
He gets found out though but he still tries to carry on paying for her to spend time with him. So he blows his entire life savings on her. They dine and stay at a fancy hotel he can't afford. The hotel staff threaten to call the police. Right on cue a widow, looking for toy boy dick, comes to his rescue. Only she wants him to be her toy boy and he agrees 'cause he's gotta pay off the debt somehow. Horny widow buys him nice clothes and wants to mold him to…
If a movie is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes then I always give it a chance, and that's what I did with this film. Well Priceless is one thing and that's definitely not fresh. Next year I've decided I'm going to watch through loads of Rotten Tomatoes certified fresh films and see how good they really are. Priceless is painfully boring, generic, and really not that great. It also has one of the most generic endings that we've seen in so many rom-com's before. The characters aren't really that interesting, to be honest they are pretty annoying and not likeable. There's not enough for you to actually grow to like them. In the end Priceless is a film that just bored me, it bought nothing new to the rom-com genre and didn't do anything to stand out, it was just another generic one with a lot of the same things that we have seen before.
Worth it just to see Tautou play against her normal innocent waif typecasting in her role as an experienced and worldly gold-digger. And Gad Elmaleh is a hoot, and quite charming and kinda cute to boot.
gold digging and scamming 101 👌
i need to get me a french sugar daddy/mama asap
With romantic comedies, you always know how they'll end, so the trick is subverting your expectations of how they'll get there. This one succeeds in that respect.
Hors de Prix is just gorgeous and fun. From its French Riviera setting, to its use of Tatou and Elmaleh, everything just works for me. A light, airy, and amusing take on gold digging is executed sublimely. I love how nonjudgmental the film is towards its characters. They are who they are and the film mines that for comedy and romance rather than blame and recrimination. It's the kind of film you'd expect to see Audrey Hepburn in, were she still around. Unlike her best known character in Amelie, here Audrey Tatou is less "manic pixie dream girl" and more the jaded object of desire. She plays it effortlessly against Gad Elmaleh's awkward charm.
This would be a perfect rainy day movie. A nice way to cheer up and dream you were in Nice instead of wherever you are. It's what most romantic comedies wish they could be but don't come close to. Redemptive of its oft-maligned genre. Recommended.
L'une de mes comédies romantiques préférées, si ce n'est ma préférée. Audrey Tautou, je t'aime.
Junk trash loosely inspired by Breakfast at Tiffany's.
That had Audrey Hepburn.
Entretenidilla, sin más.
A very different romantic comedy were two person try to be the best goldigger, while also satisfying they cougars that pay for the things they want. This french romantic comedy really starts after the first 25 minutes, although the first part is really nice.
This picks up where Part I of this list left off. Letterboxd would keep giving an 'internal error' message when…
I've been picking up and keeping movie flyers/postcards from cinemas for ages (at least 10 years). I'm not as vigilant…
