Can you believe this movie has NINE sequels? This one at least has - briefly - William Hickey and - even more briefly - Barbara Crampton. There's a few nice stop motion effects, and the puppets are fun (did you know Blade was based on Klaus Kinski?) but these films are the epitome of the disposable, forgettable FULL MOON style.

A film so replete with padding that it goes beyond boring into a form of performance art, then laps itself and becomes boring again.

Very silly story, but those puppets do have a charm of their own.

For a few minutes, I thought this was going to be an awesomely nostalgic rewatch. These were, of course, the few minutes before I realized I only ever saw Puppet Master 4 and 5 all the way through when I was little and that, even at age 6, I would never, ever have been able to sit through this nonsensical, dull-as-ditchwater first installment. The puppets are cool, though, and the film gets an extra half star simply because it was cool anytime the puppets killed people. Cool.

I like to write at least several paragraphs about the movies I watch but that's not possible with Puppetmaster. It wasn't bad or good, it just didn't make any sense. Somehow a movie about murderous dolls bored me to tears. The dolls are done quite well though.
This is the stuff that nightmares are made of in childhood, in adulthood though it is quite dull.
Interesting facts about Puppetmaster:
The puppet, Blade, is based on one of David Schmoeller's favorite actors, Klaus Kinski.
In a 1999 interview with horror movie website The Terror Trap, Schmoeller admitted that the reason he was not involved with the rest of the Puppet Master series aside from a character credit was that it would…

A film about puppets coming to life and killing people has no right to be this boring. Not scary or effective as a horror, and not even close to entering the realms of so-bad-it's-good accidental comedy, Puppetmaster is just dull. It perks up after an hour when the puppets actually make their entrance (one has a drill head, another regurgitates leeches) but by that point you will be beyond caring. Somehow a massive franchise was spawned off the back of this film. Don't pull any strings to watch this film (puppet...strings...).

There is, at its core, a workable premise in this movie. And aside from a few scenes, the plot manages to be moderately coherent. I’ll concede that with some serious editing, and a re-write here and there, this may have been an OK movie. But as it stands, it’s just impossible to view it as anything other than ridiculous. There’s a sense in some scenes that it’s trying to be a bit humorous. But I’m not laughing with it. I’m not laughing at it, either. I’m staring at it, head tilted, asking if it really expects me to be enjoying this. Read full review.

This movie is just not very good. For a movie about puppets come to life, it was never scary. The female one that vomits leeches is a little gross, but that's it. It seems that the tone and score were both all wrong.

I’ve seen this a few times over the years and always kind of enjoyed it. I still like it now but it really isn’t a great film. The pace is a bit all over the place and it plods along unevenly. I like the setting of the old hotel though I feel like it could have been used a little more in it’s advantage. Richard Band’s score is kind of poor yet it seems to weirdly fit things quite nicely. It really stands out a bit too much though. The puppets all look great and the stop motion, while noticeable, is pretty nice. The kills aren’t all that good, mostly off screen and unseen. It’s a decent film but I think this may be the last watch I give it.

I'm not quite sure how to rate the original Puppet Master. It's not a very good movie, and the suspension of disbelief that these tiny puppets are not only killing people, but outwitting and overpowering them is rather hilarious. But on the other hand, after the overlong character development, the film's pretty entertaining for a straight-to-VHS flick from the late '80s. For the $5 I spent on a combo pack of the first three films, you can't go wrong (well, you probably can... but for me it works).

well this was a thing... um... the puppets were well made i guess. paul le mat is absolutely no one's idea of a leading man though, like some budget version of william devane which even at full budget isn't exactly a thrilling prospect to me...

Been revisiting these since Full Moon decided to upgrade these to widescreen HD. Though not the best of the bunch, it is still a good time with cool stop motion effects in a fun setting.
