Synopsis
The Feel Good Event of the Year!
This film tells the tale of the Harper Affair, in which young Jimmy Harper finds his life of promise turn into a life of debauchery and murder thanks to the new drug menace marijuana. Along the way he receives help from his girlfriend Mary and Jesus himself, but always finds himself in the arms of the Reefer Man and the rest of the denizens of the Reefer Den.

Light-hearted singing
tries to disguise the horror

“Kifferwahn” ist ganz großes Kino. Von der ersten Minute an nimmt sich der Film nicht ernst und glänzt durch Schauspieler die durch totales Overacting glänzen. Christian Campbell (Angels!) als Jimmy Harper, Kristen Bell (Spartan) als Mary Lane und John Kassir (Agent 00, Dr. Rage) als Ralph fallen dabei besonders positiv. Wenn Jimmy dann seinem ersten Drogenrausch verfällt bleibt garantiert kein Auge trocken.
Wie es sich für ein Musical gehört, gibt es in “Kifferwahn” natürlich auch eine Menge Musik. Und die Lieder sind richtig gut geworden. Besonders der Song “Listen to Jesus, Jimmy” stellt unter den Musiktiteln ein absolutes Highlight dar, aber auch “Romeo & Juliet” und “Little Mary Sunshine” sind richtig gut geworden. Hier kommen die Freunde des klassischen Musicals nicht zu kurz.
Was allerdings an “Kifferwahn” nicht wirklich überzeugen kann ist die Story. Diese mag zwar durch ihr ungewöhnliches Setting durchaus unterhalten, doch ist der Anspruch der Story eher am unteren Ende der Latte anzusiedeln.

It's not often I enjoy a musical but this is fantastic. Taking propaganda thrown around in the 30s about weed and making a musical that shows everyone's life fall to pieces over it is great. The comic timing is spot on, the jokes are delivered in all kinds of ways they'll be something for everyone and that poor woman who spends the entire film being beaten up! Great fun! Catchy tunes too.

Bottom Line: Great silly fun that takes all those awful looking propaganda films and sends them up perfectly. Recommended! -
"Turning all our children into hooligans and whores!" Alan Cumming and Kristen Bell are fantastic in this musical spin on the heavy-handed anti-drugs propaganda films of the 30s.

Seems like smoking pot turns you into a dancing zombie. Not that bad kind of a deal I guess.
