Revanche translated to English means revenge, but it isn't a typical revenge story. It brings a welcome twist to a genre that is already oversaturated. At this stage revanche is the only götz spielmann film I've seen, and now I can't wait to see more. The direction is great and the screenplay is, I think, one of the best ever. The characters are written so unbelievably well, they all feel very real and all of the decisions they make feel justified. This is extremely impressive considering how important some of the decisions made are.
The realism is absolutely my favourite part of this film. I already mentioned how real the characters feel, but that's not the extent of the realism.…
you wouldn't think this is the kind of movie made near perfect by the inclusion of an old guy with an accordion, and yet..
88/100
Brilliant crime-thriller. It's like The Place Beyond the Pines if you were to cut out that shitty third act and keep following the two main characters even further down the rabbit hole. It goes in directions I didn't expect and manages to stay gripping throughout while maintaining a sense of realism in the decisions being made by these people in a lose-lose situation. Things never fly off the scale of believability which for me is a common problem in this sub-genre.
Not much else to say about this one...a real must see if you are at all a fan of thrillers or crime films.
Quietly told story that is well put together but a little too artificial. The subtle approach is refreshing and the story is never predictable. Visually very tight, lots of static shots, that almost feel hypnotic. It handles themes like grief, revenge and forgiveness interesting with different approaches. Great to see how the characters are all grey and not black and white, this makes up for complicated relationships. The biggest stumbling block are the narrative weaknesses that sometimes have many coincidences or easy choices.
Revanche | Revenge | A second chance
Alex is a man burdened by a dark past, and his current murky future holds him down from moving on to a better life. Tamara sells herself at the brothel where he works, and is also lost in this cruel world where cruel old men make the rules and set the tone for the lives of others. Could Tamara be his savior?
In this academy nominated breakthrough film from Austrian director Götz Spielmann, a story emerges of how their broken lives, desperate for a release, clash with those of others in a vision of beauty and anger, hope and revenge.
Great film making from Spielmann that without a musical score holds the viewer close through clever use of creative cinematography, carefully controlled dialogue and a brilliant screenplay. This is edge of the seat stuff.

"It is impossible to suffer without making someone pay for it; every complaint already contains revenge"

What is it about Europeans and the concept of thriller that meshes so perfectly? This slow burn mind game will slowly creep up on you and when it finally reaches the third act it will strike a dagger into your soul. The director uses serenity and sounds of nature as a technique in country surroundings to evoke the feelings of the characters who undergo sorrow, tranquility and finally harmony.Restrained performances, subtle yet beautiful camerawork this one is MUST WATCH!!!
A new life as revenge for a remorseful death, how poetic.
Very raw, introspective and messy, absolutely loved the second half and how morally ambiguous everyone is- desperately trying to better themselves but with fundamental flaws that unravel throughout the movie.
we could marvel at the Austrian tone again, although not from the master himself, but from Ulrich Seidl light Götz Spielmann. He robs the Austrian everyday scenarios of their satirical humor by being to cautious and relying on second hand humor, and while Seidl shows how grotesque human and social existence can be, REVANCHE still manages to come the closest to a Berlin doom and ruination correlating with the festival itself.
The World Is More Than Enough 2: Back To The 30 Countries (22/30 - Austria)
Perhaps the first major thing that struck me about this splendid movie is just how well director Götz Spielmann uses the depth of his locations.
There is a marvellous scene near the start of Revanche where Irina Potapenko is getting changed at the brothel she works at. In the same room there are three other women, and she is getting changed at the back. Keeping a close eye on the woman at the front, you notice that she shoots her a couple of really subtle but dirty looks out of the corner of her eye. You later learn that Potapenko is the 'favourite' of the…
A fascinating story suffused with moral conundrums, with a host of flawed but human characters. A screenplay that walks right up to the line of being too complex but tidy, yet never walks over it. A plot that makes you think, but not so much that it removes any of the tension.
Revanche is a small miracle of a thriller. There’s no humor to speak of, but when a film is this tightly wound, it doesn’t need any.
