Rio
2011 Directed by Carlos Saldanha
Synopsis
1 out of every 8 Americans is afraid of flying. Most of them don't have feathers.
From the makers of the hit "Ice Age" series comes "Rio," a comedy adventure about taking a walk on the wild side. Blu is a domesticated Macaw who never learned to fly, living a comfortable life with his owner and best friend Linda in the small town of Moose Lake, Minnesota. Blu and Linda think he's the last of his kind, but when they learn about another Macaw who lives in Rio de Janeiro, they head to the faraway and exotic land to find Jewel, Blu's female counterpart. Not long after they arrive, Blu and Jewel are kidnapped by a group of bungling animal smugglers. With the help of street smart Jewel, and a group of wise-cracking and smooth-talking city birds, Blu escapes. Now, with his new friends by his side, Blu will have to find the courage to learn to fly, thwart the kidnappers who are hot on their trail, and return to Linda, the best friend a bird ever had.

Blue Sky Studios have a pretty mediocre record when it comes to feature films and I can't see Rio turning that form around any time soon. They certainly don't make the worst CGI family films around but they do perhaps make the dullest and safest.
Rio plays out exactly how you would expect it to with each of the characters performing the roles you have seen a hundred times before. Even for a young audience they'd probably get a strong sense of deja vu with little in the film standing out from a whole host of other brightly coloured CGI movies. With expectations lowered the film doesn't really do anything too wrong it just doesn't seem to try to do…

A lot better than I expecting, I though it would be a crappy animation aimed at kids but its better than that. Jesse Eisenberg is great as Blue, he really made the character endearing.
Beautiful animation as we have come to expect from modern day animated flicks. Kids will love it and adults will find just about enough to justify a viewing.

Just really cute and colourful and feel good. Could have done without the voice of Will.i.am. Was really surprised to see that it wasn't the work of Pixar or Dreamworks but it was great nonetheless.

It's about time Blue Sky Studios- the animators behind Ice Age and Robots- take a page from Pixar's book and ditch the animated dance numbers.
Rumors abound, this plot's similarity to Pixar's Newt led to the film's cancellation in its development stages. One can not help but wonder what Pixar could have done with this story, but expunging it of the dulling show-tunes would've been a start.
Jemaine Clement is a highlight, however.

Predictable and dull. It tries too hard on both humor and an emotional feel. The story is minor and the characters are forgettable. Cheap laughs and sad attempts at making the audience feel something for the characters abound making it annoying to watch. It is very colorful but so is a bowl of Froot Loops - and the Froot Loops are more enjoyable.

I really did not enjoy this movie and am now of the firm opinion that Jesse Eisenberg should forgo any future gigs as a voice-acting talent. That being said, Jane Lynch and Jemaine Clement's voice-acting talent should be used in every movie. Rio is a generic formula which hits enough of the right beats but never excels in any area either. This may have been passable in the earlier days of kids movies, but not now. Even though this may not interest adults, kids will enjoy the incredibly bright colors and music that they can easily dance to.

Visually striking, generally I am not as focused on the visuals of animated movies, but this one really kept my eyes engaged, the colors are great, the framing, animation and how alive the characters and the world were really made this work for me. It manages to engage you in a way that you forget is animation, seems tangible and you just go with it, the story is ok, nothing too spectacular and the humor is mostly for children, but it's still entertaining overall.

With a barrage of multi-colour and a rhythmic samba beat, the animated world of ‘Rio’ is vividly brought to life through the extremely talented animation house ‘BlueSky’ - creators of the ‘Ice Age’ franchise. Pitched somewhere between ‘Happy Feet’ and ‘Madagascar’, this film deals with the harsh reality of animal poaching whilst maintaining a simplistic storyline that never detracts the younger demographic, of which it is most obviously aimed. Where ‘Happy Feet’ seemed to press the issue of conservation into viewers eyes, ‘Rio’ is happy to only have the facts run underneath the main narrative; there, but never the main focus of audiences attention. In this manner, and in many ways, ‘Rio’ is a fun, entertaining and lighthearted film that…

This piece of shit actually makes me feel a little bad about butchering The Pirates! Band of Misfits the other day....
Besides the vibrant colors from exotic birds and Rio, this movie really has nothing going for it. It takes the simple safe road, looks like a barely deeper animation than Disney used to make in the 90's, and the story is neither suitable for anyone demanding more than kids does, nor suited for kids thanks to its ridiculous portrayal of mating-rituals--both bird-wise and human-wise...
I'd rather see kids being over-moralized by Disney's typical cliches than learn anything from this, and I can barely stand the modern Disney in the first place....

One of my favourite films of 2011, "Rio" is a film that relies heavily on colour, which isn't at all a bad thing. It's exuberant and vivid palette succinctly and energetically bring the titular setting, the characters and the story to life. The reds, yellows, blues and oranges gleam and are absolutely breathtaking to watch, as you see many establishing shots of the computer-generated depiction of Rio. This is the main reason I love this film so much, it's absolutely amazing to look at. And I'm not suggesting it's 'style over substance', because it is an animated film after all, so bringing the CGI-created world to life is an essential purpose, and "Rio" does it fantastically.
The film does have…

Nicht mein Ding. Grässlicher Soundtrack und unpassende Stimmen (im Original). Aber auch Story & Figuren können nur bedingt überzeugen.

Was visiting family and this is a small child's favourite movie, apparently. As much as we tried not to, we kinda got sucked in. Was pretty funny and cute with a minimal amount of cheesy musical numbers. Fairly predictable.

Basically the bird is pimped out to procreate to save his species with some lame musical numbers where the birds are raving. The main villain is also lame where he is the generic poacher who wants to kill Blu, kind of a shame because Nigel was an interesting and funny character, reduced here to a side villain and barely getting any screen time.
