Romantics Anonymous
2011 ‘Les émotifs anonymes’ Directed by Jean-Pierre Améris
Synopsis
What happens when a man and a woman share a common passion? They fall in love. And this is what happens to Jean-René, the boss of a small chocolate factory, and Angélique, a gifted chocolate maker he has just hired. What occurs when a highly emotional man meets a highly emotional woman? They fall in love, and this is what occurs to Jean-René and Angélique who share the same handicap. But being pathologically timid does not make things easy for them. So whether they will manage to get together, join their solitudes and live happily ever after is a guessing matter.

A delightful rom-com featuring two charmingly neurotic French chocolate makers. The characters are unrealistic but loveable, and they're developed thoughtfully.
Well worth a watch. You'll shed a tear and laugh out loud. What more could you want?

I love French romantic comedies and this one doesn't disappoint. French films are great at playing up emotions. They have a way of bringing out the real-ness of situations by amplifying the awkwardness, anxieties, hurt, passion, and of course love. This one takes the shyness of both main characters to super uncomfortable levels that are at the same time painful but humorous to watch. And while their anxieties and fears are overamplified, it's hard not to relate to both, and find yourself crying and laughing with joy at the end.

This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

A beautifully warm, funny and very french comedy starring the always magnificent Benoit Poelvoorde and the always lovely Isabelle Carré.
Shot at times with the same fuzzy glow of Amélie it's a romantic comedy that is actually funny AND romantic with a simple charm thats missing from 99% of rom-coms coming from hollywood.
It's a film that makes you want to be in love, to be loved and to eat chocolate.

I didn't know there was such a thing. A support group for romantics? But the translation is not quite right, because the original title is Les émotifs anonymes or, emotionals anonymous. Semantics--The study of meaning or the problem of understanding. That too would have worked as a title, Semantics Anonymous. Not good marketing though. The movie itself is a cookie cutter story of misunderstanding and navigation, which could have been so much more. Two people with social anxieties is a goldmine of possibilities for humor and seriousness, which isn't extracted here. The good news? There are little glimmers to enjoy and it's not a total waste of an afternoon.

Decided to watch this little French romantic comedy since in the spirit of Valentine's Day. The only word I can think of to describe it is "cute". It's just cute. It's not some lustful, fiery romance; it's just cute. Two awkward, chocolate-loving adults are scared of almost everything but find comfort in each other. It's not overly ooey-gooey, and it has some genuinely hilarious parts. I'd say it's worth a viewing.
