Russell Crowe is the star of this movie. His performce in my eyes is good, very very good. The movie is a dark movie and I didn't root for anyone in it but I kept watching because I wanted to know wether they would get out or destroy themselves. Also the soundtrack of this movie fits perfect and it sets the tone very well. If you like American History X then this will be a movie for you.

O before I forget, Russell Crowe just hates gooks.

Another film I got as a gift from one of my brothers some time ago. I remember hearing stuff about this film back in the 90s, but wasn't able to find it at any video rental store. So I asked for it as a gift and got it (in the late 90s, I guess).

Thing is that I wasn't too impressed by it. The film follows a group of Australian skinheads led by Hando (Russell Crowe) that get their kicks…

Russell Crowe plays Hando, leader of a gang of neo-Nazi skinheads who engage upon an extremely violet rampage targetting Vietnamese Australians.
The film was thoroughly unpleasant, filled with thoroughly unpleasant people, and I wish we had gained some understanding of why they had ended up as they did. It was very well acted though, as they were horribly believable in their hateful roles.
On Lovefilm Instant until 30th June.

The strange thing about this movie is that the depiction of the skinheads is almost comical. They bumble around bumping into each other and making dumb jokes. This is true for all except Hando, (Russel Crowe). His screen presence in this movie is so terrifying if made me shudder. There seems to be nothing inherently good about this character, not a single moment or action gives us hope for his redemption.

Which leads to the other interesting thing I found…

I used to really dislike Russell Crowe, but he's slowly winning me over. His performances in L.A. Confidential, Virtuosity and Les Miserables are all worthy of praise, but none of them match his work in Romper Stomper. His powerful, quietly intimidating performance as skinhead leader Hando is the centre of this daring, important Australian film. The sequence in which a large group of Vietnamese youths chase Hando and his peers is one of the most tense I've ever seen in my life and the soundtrack of 'skinhead punk' gives the film a trashy but fitting aura. A hard watch, but definitely worth it.

If there is one thing more despicable than ignorant, filthy, piece of dogshit nazis is fucking neonazis.

Aside from good performances by Russel Crowe and Daniel Pollock (RIP) there is nothing outstanding about this film.

Why It’s Essential — ROMPER STOMPER proved successful upon release in Australia for its gritty, realistic portrayal of racial discord.

Why You’ll Want to Skip It — The film is unpleasant, repetitive, and predictable.

This was my second week movie assigment for Mystery March Challenge, a movie that I've never heard about before the challenge. Since my references for skinhead movies are the fantastic American History X and The Believer, both with an intense social critic and fantastic lead performances, I got really excited to see this, but I felt a little disapointed. Comparing it with those other two movies, this looks dull, empty and confusing, like the director didn't knew what he wanted…

Violence in and out, almost of a cartoonish quality; Watchable because it is nothing more than an exciting, magnetic Russell Crowe performance with an outlandish story constructed around it. I feel some kinda way about the homage(s) to A Clockwork Orange (in the opening railroad station sequence, the home invasion sequence and that shot of the skinheads driving down the road, headlights casting a plastic luminary on the surrounding trees and road).

Romper Stomer, like American History X, provides an uncomfortable but engaging look at Neo Nazis and their hyper-violent lifestyle. But unlike American History X, there is no protagonist that has learned from his ways that the audience can root for. Instead we have an eye-popping, charismatic Russell Crowe who firmly believes in his cause and is self destructive in his pursuit of it. In this role, Crowe shows signs of the star he will become and is the highlight performance.…

    VIETNAM FUCKING SHIT: The Movie

Being told that Romper Stomper was better than American History X, I decided to give it a try. It's an okay tale of a couple of skinheads making ignorant decisions and being just as cloddish.

It's neither pro neo-Nazi or anti neo-Nazi, but felt sympathetic towards them in a few places. Romper Stomper isn't better nor worse than American History X, and is rather its own take on neo-Nazism.

    It's okay.
