This movie is stupid. Selleck has a massive moustache. The robots are not even remotely believable. In a post Blade Runner world this is what they came up with? Michael Crichton was big on ideas that's for sure but beyond that I'm not sure he ever really managed to succeed in the film industry.

I'm a Sci-Fi lover but I have to admit this isn't a great film.
For one thing I never considered Crichton a great director-or even a good director for that matter. I think this film really proved to me that directing wasn't his best of talents.
Tom Selleck is fine in this but there really isn't a whole lot to his character even though his hangups are shoved down our throat. He lost a suspect in a chase who ended up killing 6 people later that night-he also suffers from vertigo-so with that in mind his obsession with catching Simmon's character is justified and we get some trouble with vertigo scenes. So maybe a better way to put it is…

In the future, robots will be everywhere, but they will look like VHS players with wheels. Despite there lack of opposable thumbs, an ability to climb steps, or a speed over 3 mph, they will be deadly if so programmed. Also, they will have such annoying voices that you will want to beat them to death with a baseball bat.
The most notable thing about this movie is how much charisma Tom Selleck has and how natural he seems in a truly bad movie. It's a shame he was never able to parlay his small screen success into a more regular movie career, because he certainly has something.
Sadly, the movie does not.

Wow! Now that is some bad 80s scifi. I thoroughly enjoyed the cheesiness. Also, Gene Simmons as the bad guy? Hell yeah!

My god I had forgotten how fucking cheesy this movie is. Gene Simmons is pretty awesome in this. He's got a fancy smart-bullet gun that fires mini-missiles that literally chase people around corners. It's hard to take Tom Selleck and his mega-stache particularly seriously with awkward plastic robots scurrying around everywhere but it's still a good time.

DEM SPIDER ROBOTS
I still remember this shit -
Holy wow. This movie is amazing for 2 reasons. 1) what we thought computing in the future would be like. (basically SLIGHTLY faster than current 1984 computing). 2)What was still deemed PG-13 (lady nipples!). Otherwise, more over the top Selleck acting. And Gene Simmons is ridiculous (also he may have stopped aging in 1984).

Holy 80's kitschy sci-fi! Directed by Michael Crichton and starring a post-Magnum Tom Selleck, this is a now hilarious depiction of how robots were going to rule our world in the near future of 1984. Gene Simmons plays the villain, to boot. Well worth a run down the nostalgia trail!
