Reviews of Safety Not Guaranteed 2012

It's funny, I was going through all the movies I've seen by popularity, and what stood out to me as very odd was that more people have seen this than Saving Private Ryan. Go through your list of movies you've seen by popularity, and you'll find some surprises. It's rather entertaining.

It's always fantastic when a film can still surprise you. I wasn't entirely sure what tone I was to expect - having effectively picked this film based on it's poster - so I was pleasantly surprised to find it was much deeper and meatier than I anticipated. Although the characters have their usual 'indie' appearance, it's their development and interactions that really brings this together into a thoughtful piece. It's a character driven film, don't expect to watch it for the time travel aspect.

Refreshing enjoyable movie.

I really enjoyed this film with one of my favorite actresses, Aubrey Plaza, who is from NBC'S hit show, Parks and Recreation. Anyway, I really enjoyed her acting in this film. She does a great job for showing emotions. I have a feeling that she is going to have a great career. Most of the actors gave some pretty standard acting. One of the characters, Geoff, basically all the movie he talked about sex. I'm not gay or anything but…

I had to shut this film off half way the first time watching it. Not because it was bad but just because it hit me right in the feels. I guess I just relate to Aubrey Plaza's character Darius to much on top of that Aubrey is so cute it hurt me a little on the inside knowing that she will never be mine. The film is flawed sure but that doesn't make it bad. If you went into this…

SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED (Trevorrow, 2012) Mostly shticky, indie, Sundancey toothless stuff. Aubrey’s well cast here, and she’s got star potential, but I must admit I don’t want to see her play this role again. Also this guy’s directing JURASSIC PARK 4?

This movie surprised me. I did not know that much about it going in. For some reason, I thought it was going to be a low budget thriller like PRIMER. Once I started, I looked like it was going to be a flaky, independent film with overly quirky characters and a look-at-how-hip-we-are soundtrack. It did have elements of the latter description, but it was a bit more insightful than I expected.
Nearly all the characters in the film have lost… -
The perfect example of the indie calling-card movie: Looks great, quirky as hell, totally useless. Aubrey Plaza does what she can, but there's just no weight to any of these "time travel" shenanigans at all, even as metaphor. I really hope digital filmmaking gets cheap enough to where aspiring Hollywood directors can sends movies like this straight to studio executives. It feels like the audience is witnessing a transaction.
