Part of Dastardly Difficult December: film nr.4
Sinterklaas is a Dutch feast for children. In November Sinterklaas comes to the Netherlands on a steamboat with his helpers (Black Petes) to hand out gifts, leading up to December 5th when it's 'pakjesavond'. This is when he and his helpers leave bags full of gifts at the doors of families with young children. During this period leading up to December 5th children are allowed to place their shoes near the fireplace and the Black Petes' will climb down the chimney and leave gifts in the childrens' shoes. Yes, they are black from the soot, nothing politically incorrect there. This is our Christmas and it is a beautiful lie I enjoy telling to…

Sint, to give it it's Dutch title is an interesting take on European origins of Saint Nicolas. In most of Northern Europe, families celebrate the Sint festivities( bigger deal than Christmas) as children receives gifts & sweets in the shoes for several days to up & include the 5th December.
In this version the folklore, the Sint is a medieval sadistic . murderous zealot aided by the zombie Black Peters who kidnap children who have been naughty. What I found interesting about the story is that is not too far remove the real legend, include the iconic image of non-PC blacked up young boys( normal woman don the bright tights & afro wigs to throw the sweets at passing children).

2003 in the Netherlands was the first time I heard the tale of Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet. Even then I thought the tale was creepy and was a perfect cautionary tale. I love the idea that bad kids not only don't get presents but get kidnapped back to Spain by Zwarte Piet (Black Pete.)
This film from the Netherlands does a good job of bringing the tale to life with a bit of undead embellishment. Every time Saint Nicholas is on screen the visuals are eye catching and entertaining. I really liked the roof top chase scene involving the horse. The army of Black Petes was also pretty cool.
Sadly, I got stuck watching the dubbed version on Netflix. I hate to watch foreign movies in English. However in this case, the cheesy dialogue track might have helped with my enjoyment levels.
I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a sequel.

Dick Maas laat in ieder geval zien wat hij wilde, met welke effecten en kwaliteit hij dat doet staat daar weer buiten..

Not too bad Dutch horror that makes a change from the usual Santa slayings.

The latest effort by the guy who some may recall was responsible for that movie about the killer elevator featuring a pre-stardom Naomi Watts, this is a very solid Carpenter shrine that may be far from essential viewing, but it without a doubt confirms Maas as a worthy genre talent who I hope to see release new work with more consistency. Fans of Halloween and The Fog ought to get a particular kick out of it.

This is pretty good, but there's nothing outstanding about that makes it required watching. The first half is a cute 80s slasher throwback and the last half is suddenly a gory action movie. Don't watch it on netflix, though, because the dubbing is bizarre.

From the director of The Lift which I quite liked, come Saint Nick which I did not like. Not helped by some of the worst dubbing you are ever likely to see. I’d never heard of the legend of saint nick and the giving of presents on December 5th. Must be a Dutch thing. The film has some nice gore at times and I liked the shots of Saint Nick riding on the roof tops. The rest of the film is just awful. It’s slow and the story just goes no where.

Dutch tongue-in-cheek Supernatural Horror based around their version of the Santa Claus mythology. Gory, unusual and fun. 7/10.
