Week 3 of the Adapted April Challenge
Full disclosure: I'm a huge Stephen King fan and I'm usually not a friend of Johnny Depp's performances. So when I saw that my assignment for this week was the Stephen King adaptation Secret Window starring Johnnny Depp, I didn't really know what to expect. Would I like it? Would I hate it?
Well, I saw it and the final verdict is none of the above. If I had to describe this movie with only one word, it would be "meh".
Meh, because this was mostly a dull affair to me. The premise of an author who gets confronted with claims of plagiarism by a mysterious man has promise, but that gets mostly…

A suspenseful movie with a twisty ending doesn't always play well on repeat viewings. Because you often look for signs and clues instead of taking the ride the movie wants you to take another time. It has been quite a few years since I watched SECRET WINDOW and even though I knew the ending this time through, I had a great time revisiting this terrific movie.
Reason number one is Johnny Depp. In another just fantastic nuanced performance. He inhabits this writer character as much as he does Jack Sparrow or Edward Scissorhands, adding so many little things that real people do when they, say, put on their glasses or look at their watch, or back out a car. Nothing…

Deep down I love this movie, and I think I love it because it sits casually somewhere between hilarious and uncomfortable. Depp's portrayal of Mort Rainey is a curiosity because it's Depp at his Deppiest and yet all I see here is a depressive author mostly alone in his cabin pretending to be productive and instead allowing his anger to get the better of him.
The cast is nice and flowy besides the big name front and center and enormous-headed on the cover. There's Turturro as the catchily named John Shooter, and... other people in assorted roles doing the things the characters would do! They come together to form something of a nice motley crew, a ragtag bunch that fit…

Johnny Depp is on good form in this ace thriller from the mind of Stephen King...

Week 4 - Adapted April Challenge
The premise for "Secret Window" is good, but the story gets kinda predictable after a while. The suspense and tension is lost sometimes. However, Johnny Deep saves the day with a great performance.

I remember two things about this: the dumb twist ending, and John Turturro in a giant hat showing up on Johnny Depp's door and saying "You stole my story" in his goofy southern accent. I'm sure the film is a perfectly fine little thriller, but it wasn't terribly memorable. On the plus side, this was before Johnny Depp became kind of unbearable.

All I remember is Johnny gets braces at the end for some fuckin' reason.

I remember enjoying this when it came out (I was 14) and rewatched it today. My lord, I had a nasty taste as a teenager. This was tragically terrible!

Ten minutes in and I knew exactly how this was going to play out.

The story was nothing new or overly original to make me recommend this film to anyone. Depp didn't seem to overly care about the role nor did anyone else in the film. The suspense for me never built up, but it built to almost a doze off. I felt an utter sense of boredom during the film and a sense of 'Yeah, so that happened. Moving on' after the film. A feeling I feel that no film should ever have. Every film should have something to talk about when done but this one just left not impact. I have not read the novella and this film makes me have no interest in the film. I still have a respect for the works of King but this is dark spot on his film works at least.
