Synopsis
At the end of the world his real journey began.
Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer journeys to the Himalayas without his family to head an expedition in 1939. But when World War II breaks out, the arrogant Harrer falls into Allied forces' hands as a prisoner of war. He escapes with a fellow detainee and makes his way to Llaso, Tibet, where he meets the 14-year-old Dalai Lama, whose friendship ultimately transforms his outlook on life.

Brad Pitt headlines this true tale of a mans inadvertent quest for redemption. Heinrich Harrer (Pitt), a self absorbed Austrian mountain climber possessed by his own ego becomes friends with the Dalai Lama at the time of the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Harrer a prickly soul is captured while attempting to summit a peak in the Indian Himalayas, he is taken as a prisoner of war but escapes and makes his way to Tibet. Here he learns that the coverted attachement to ego in his own culture are not the qualities respected by those of the peaceful Tibetens.

Decent film. Nice insight into a part of the world and the philosophy of the Dalai Lama.

A good film overall, great landscape shots and solid acting from Pitt and Thewlis. It feels a tad long, and in the final act it looses its focus, shifiting from biopic to a political warfilm...
