Three of hollywood's more irritating figures in a retro $70 million all-green screen movie: it sounds like the recipe of a giant fiasco. The assured hand of director and writer Kerry Conran and his obsessive attention to period detail prevent this movie from going off the rails and potentially becoming another CRYSTAL SKULL. Combining the best elements of mid-century comic books, 30's and 40's serials, film noir, art deco, and adventure films, SKY CAPTAIN is nothing but a fun, rousing action film with the throwback sensibilities of all those same elements.
Having seen this in a mostly empty theater upon it's release, I was blown away by the detail of the special effects, despite their lack of realism. Seeing it now, on a laptop, is much less impressive, however the story and action still hold up. Also, it's very funny in that 1930's cornball way.

Shouldn't this movie be called Polly Pepper Pots Perkins and the World of Tomorrow to be more accurate? Anyways, it looks a bit like art from the former Soviet. And Angelina Jolie makes a boring and unnecessary appearance.

I am really not sure about this one. In certain areas it works brilliantly and in others it looks like it has been put together by some kids who were distracted by the ice cream truck outside.
For a film solely dedicated to being filmed on green screen the effects are sometimes no short of shocking. This coupled with the opening sequence consisting of Paltrow falling over alot almost made me want to turn it off.
It has the style and grace of any programme in the 30s or 40s predicting the future, with rockets and floating air bases.
Whilst I may be wrong I can see this being a cult classic in a few years. Hey but what do I know. Give it a try and dont take it too seriously.
Alert the amphibious squadron.

After seeing the Incredibles and this movie within a short time period, I'm starting to warm up to the idea of building a high-tech island hideout.

No, all the technology in the world can't make a good movie.

Have the suspicion HD makes it seem worse than it really is, but if it ever looked good, it doesn't really anymore. Furthermore, the soundtrack is almost grating, the pastiches are surprisingly tepid, and the action parts, which make up most of the movie, literally never end. I'm actually watching them even now, and always will. The movie is still kind of cool though, being so unique.

A major disappointment. Rather than offer something new or interesting with throwbacks to its serial/art deco/pulp/noir influences, it simply rehashes those ideas directly. I had hoped for an amazing and gorgeous new action noir classic but got a $40 million remake of "The Mechanical Monsters".

First time seeing this since it was still in theaters back in 2004, but boy does it still put a smile on my face. Endlessly appealing.

This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

A visually stunning, terribly acted homage to the adventure serials of the 1930's and 40's. I grew up on the Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon type stuff on public television, so I had a very real reference point as I watched this. It was also easy to see the more modern connection via Indiana Jones and even the Star Wars saga. Jude Law was probably the only actor who made any effort at all; the rest of 'em dialed it in, and both Paltrow and Jolie were dull as hell. But Sky Captain is a fun and exciting flick despite the crap cast... unique sets, monsters, ships, robots... you name it... the special effects are the star here. Not a total waste of time. Just a total popcorn movie.

Loads of nostalgic fun. Visually stunning and the score is top notch.
