I don't really understand why this movie was made other than to show Emily Browning nude. That's why I only gave it 2 1/2 stars, and that's how it earned those 2 1/2 stars.

Hey kids, you know that chick in sucker punch, well now you can see her in hot lingerie with her boobs out and jerk off even more. This is the art house sucker punch. Long preamble featuring scantily clad women, finally get to the sleeping part whilst old men lick her, the end.
This film, as the Madam continually points out, has no penetration.

I have had many opportunities to see this since last Fall, but have been consciously avoiding it. I figured that the film wouldn't be for me, and it definitely isn't. This is one disturbing movie, and at times it is also horribly pretentious. Still, right from the very first scene in the film I was riveted, disturbed, but riveted.
The movie opens with actress Emily Browning in a medical test lab having an esophageal balloon being put down her throat. As someone with a gag reflex that often makes the act of brushing teeth difficult, I found this opening scene to be terribly hard to watch. From then on, I had no idea what this film would show next, and…

Despite the lukewarm response to the film, both from audiences and critics alike, I was still looking forward to the film largely due to the tantalising trailer and talent involved and I’m pleased to say it didn’t disappoint. I can appreciate why it was poorly received; it is very cold and detached and it is hard to get a handle on the character of Lucy but criticisms of pretentiousness belittle the film. The detached aesthetics of the film are intrinsically linked to the story and the protagonist rather than it being a style over substance issue. Comparisons with Kubrick are hard to avoid (interestingly his films rarely received the critical response they deserved upon release either) due to the way…

Slickly presented, a little amusing, a lot wierd, thought requiring, well written and well acted.
Emily Browning is very effective as a spoilt, attention seeking, toffee nosed student struggling to make the transition from school kid to adulthood. A masochistic-workaholic who does every and any job under the sun, not for the money, but for the pleasure. Ouch!
I watched it on the strength of the synopsis and trailer, and I'm glad I trusted my instincts despite the abundance of negative reviews.
Those that didn't like it seem to have either (A) confused it with porn, (B) confused it with a story of fetishised mysogeny or (C) are acting like they've never seen an old mans dick before.
Basically it's a film about a knob head girl with lots of nakedness and a tiny bit of mysogeny that's relevant to the story. Rather than an "Arty, pretentious film about commodified mysogeny"

I pretty much hated everything and anything about this. After dwelling it over right now, I can totally lower my rating of it. I give it a 1 just because Emily Browning had the balls to do that role.
The main thing that bothered me is that there was barely ANY score to the whole thing. The only scene where there was instrumental music is when she Lucy was first being driven to the mansion and that was it, no more, complete silence with a dumb character. I'd rather watch a Michael Bay film than this again.

underwhelming

Somewhat weird and haunting fable about a uni slacker who goes to any lengths to make easy money.

This is a really interesting, aesthetic film. Although somewhat creepy, the material is handled in a slightly clinical way rather than sexualised. It's such an odd take on the subject matter.
