Small Town Murder Songs
2011 Directed by Ed Gass-Donnelly
Synopsis
Walter is the chief of police in a small Ontario town that has its first murder victim, an attractive young woman who is found naked on the shores of the nearby lake. The woman isn't local and while the Ontario Provincial Police have taken the lead in the investigation, Walter assists where he can. The town is mostly a close-knit Mennonite community and Walter has recently returned to his church. He is also trying to deal with his own temper that led to a violent incident some months before. As the young woman is identified, it becomes apparent that Walter's former love interest may be lying.

It is hard to stand up to "Fargo" with which many have compared this film. In my opinion "Fargo" was a masterpiece. This film is not, but that doesn't mean it's bad. It actually is quite good but could have been much better. Maybe due to its shortness (75 min) it just scratches at the surface of the protagonist's issues and although I'm sure that was the director's intention, it just wasn't enough for me. And I'm still undecided if I liked the film's use of music and slow motion.

Peter Stromare is on top form as a born again small town cop who trys to solve the case of a murdered girl, but is he trying to fit up someone who done him wrong?
Slow moving but involving and the fact that the end credits are up by the 68th minute means it doesnt outstay its welcome either.
Also I think this is the first time I've seen Martha Plimpton in something since the Goonies.

Canadian psychological drama about a policeman with a violent past investigating the rape and murder of a woman. A very disappointing film that is thin on plot and high on gimmicks.

Pienen kylän himonussijaviiksisellä kytällä on luuranko kaapissa. Teinitytön murha järkyttää mielenrauhaa.
Draama rikoksesta ja synninpäästöstä. Peter Stormare vetää hyvin.

Worth watching for the soundtrack alone. Never would have discovered Bruce Peninsula otherwise.

At just 75 minutes, this film wastes no time in presenting a marvelous character study of an Ontario Mennonite community police officer Walter, beautifully played by character actor Peter Stormare. His ex-girlfriend is Rita (well done by Jill Hennessy); her new lover his Steve (a frightening performance by Stephen Eric McIntyre); and Walter's new flame by a wonderfully cast Martha Plimpton. When who turns out to be a prostitute from a nearby town turns up in the small community, Walter's investigation leads him to suspect Steve, his ex's new live-in boyfriend. When a homicide detective shows up, Walter hides the history he has with Rita and Steve while pointing all available evidence at Steve as the killer. The film is…

I didn’t much care for this one, but I admired what it was trying to do. A quiet study of a man with a violent and shady past, who uses religion and his new sweet girlfriend (Martha Plimpton) defensively to try to keep that part of himself from breaking through. The rest of the plot almost doesn’t matter, the film is about this man and his relationships with his small town, with the Mennonite farming community, and with his past and present.
While the performances were great, I just couldn’t deal with the titular songs and the slow-mo.

Featuring one of the most annoying musical scores ever (it's by Bruce Peninsula), this cop drama is a total misfire that wastes a top-notch cast. A total letdown for me.

Ed Gass-Donnelly’s Small Town Murder Songs is a quiet storm of a film. A powerful and subdued modern gothic tale of crime and redemption set in a small Menonite town in Ontario, Canada. Walter (Peter “We cut off your Johnson, Lebowski” Stormare) is the police chief with an unspecified violent past who just wants to redeem himself in the eyes of his family, the town and god. When the body of a young woman is found on the outskirts of town Walter grabs this opportunity to prove he is a changed man by solving the case.
Small Town Murder Songs moves at a stately pace and is driven by Stormare’s incredibly subtle but emotionally complex performance. The quiet intensity he…
