Sounds Like Teen Spirit
2008 Directed by Jamie Jay Johnson
Synopsis
A 2008 documentary and debut feature film of Bafta-Award nominated director Jamie Jay Johnson. It follows the lives of the participants of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2007, specifically the entrants from Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Georgia. The film sees them proceed from the national finals that saw them crowned the representatives of their country through to the international song festival itself held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands where they each compete against 16 other acts.

Interesting documentary about competitors of Junior Eurovision. The kids open up and tell some great stories about their lives. This could have been 90 minutes of mocking attention seeking kids, but to the credit of the director, we are spared that.
This is well worth your time.

A film I missed at TIFF a few years ago that I was able to revisit recently, it follows a few selected competitors in the Jr Eurovision competition. The quality of the documentary is a bit suspect, half of it is a really well-shot, thoughtful film about these kids and their lives and half seems almost like a half-cocked television documentary. I suspect that the director (this being his first feature) was struggling with his style while shooting the film but couldn't leave out certain pieces of information or footage from his earlier shoots. It definitely improves by the end, especially his use of editing for suspense, but it feels like 2 separate movies. A good story overall, I just wish it had better workmanship.
