Space Cowboys
2000 Directed by Clint Eastwood
Synopsis
Space will never be the same.
Frank Corvin, "Hawk" Hawkins, Jerry O'Neill and Tank Sullivan were hotdog members of Project DAEDALUS, the Air Force's test program for space travel. Their hopes were dashed in 1958 with the formation of NASA and the use of trained chimps. They blackmail their way into orbit when Russia's mysterious Ikon communications satellite's orbit begins to degrade and threatens to crash into Earth.

Seen by many, including his fans, as one of Eastwood's weaker films, Space Cowboys is a project that should've worked perfectly, but due to a number of issues falls flat on its nose before it can take off. With an old school cast featuring the likes of Tommy Lee Jones, Eastwood himself and Donald Sutherland it could've been a sweetly nostalgic ride down memory lane, but due to a poor script and uncharacteristically weak direction loses its steam very early on to never really recover from it. There are plenty of decent gags sprinkled here and there, but it quickly becomes obvious that it seemed to have been the main concern during the making of the film, as everything else…

Maybe Clint Eastwood's laziest film: there's a part where a character straps himself to a bunch of nuclear warheads and attempts to blast himself halfway to the moon so the moon's gravity will carry him the rest of the way (to the moon) so, when he gets there, he can fire the missiles safely into outer space. Well, they show this guy blasting off for the moon and then in the next scene two characters are talking and one says "Do you think he made it?" and the other one says, "Yeah, he made it, and he was able to launch those missiles safely into outer space." But hey, they're the Space Cowboys, what am I going to tell you that will change that? Nothing. God bless the Space Cowboys, America's first responders.

Space Cowboys is a silly film with Clint Eastwood and Tommy Lee Jones going to space. The film is formulaic, too long, and ultimately not all that interesting. But at the same time, the film has a lot of charm. It's a lot of fun to watch a lot of these actors play off each other and the film did keep my interest despite not much happening. This is a very likable film and while I can't call it a good movie, I still had a decent time with it.

Nothing more than a time killer to be honest.

Good cast. It has its moments, but not a great movie.

A wonderful movie from that wonderful actor and director Clint Eastwood.
Really funny and very tender and suspenseful in all the right momments. Eastwood, Jones, Garner and Sutherland all work together in such a way you'd think was a fly on the wall NASA documentary, and the space sequences are great to watch.
But what sells it for me is the remarkable chemistry from Eastwood and Jones. They work so well together and produce such memorable screentime scenes together.A must see, and must buy for that

A lot of fun. It works entirely based on the work of the 4 main cast members, particularly a never disappointing Donald Sutherland. It's pretty ridiculous, but it's hard not to smile. Also, it has a pretty great final shot.
-
Ludicrous premise is powered into orbit by the raw charisma of the four leading men. Enjoyable, but nonsensical.

4 old guys go to space. Hijinks ensue. Heroism prevails.

Back in 2000 I didn't have much interest in a bunch of old guys trying to make an action film. At the time I was exploring the boundaries of cinema and catching up on classic movies. Who has time for this bollocks when you're busy with something that matters? So, what changed in the last 13 years to make me come back to it? Basically I love Clint Eastwood enough to check out anything with his name on it, especially if he directed it as well, which is the case here.
Once on board for Space Cowboys I was pleasantly surprised. The opening hour or so is all character building. Tommy Lee Jones is especially good. Then they actually go…
