In cinema today CGI is, almost without exception, used to give the illusion of reality. Even though we know there couldn't be a 30ft gorilla standing atop the Empire State building it is portrayed as real on screen. With Speed Racer the Wachowski's embrace the artificiality of the technology. It is a hard thing to actually get used to as it is so foreign in cinema. Even a film like Tron which attempts similar things softens the blow by having the CGI universe be an alternate reality within the film world. It is far easier to buy into when you see a reflection of our own reality on screen (such as the real world sections in Tron that bookend the…

God I love this film.
From the opening sequence, the Wachowski's take us on a visually impressive journey filled with emotion, childish comedy and a (perhaps needlessly) complex plot about racing, underdogs and sticking it to the man!
I'm not ashamed to say that this time, I actually teared up a few times. The family parts of this are great (although Spritle CAN get a bit on your nerves), with Susan Sarandon and John Goodman both knocking it out of the racing track with their performances. Going further, Emile Hirsch is a blast in the main role as Speed Racer, with Roger Allam delivering a terrific hammy bad-guy performance as Royalton.
Needless to say, this is a pretty childish movie.…

If the Wachowskis had been any less committed to this film, it would have failed - and I'm not talking commercially, because I know it did that. I thought Speed Racer was pretty excellent, actually. A truly live action cartoon, the world of Speed Racer was brought to life in a complete way, with an OCD-level attention to detail and a firm commitment to creating a completely believable, completely artificial world. This movie is why adults (*cough* me) still read comic books and still play video games - fun is not just for children.
I think I liked everything about this movie - of course the visuals, but also the TV/anime-inspired effects, the flashbacks, even the convoluted, dark plot. It's…

I paused this to call my drug dealer and the real world was in black & white. This film is like colouring in your eyes with crayons, sticking your head into a tin of Quality Street, setting it on fire while jumping off the roof of your house onto a bouncy castle full of Christina Riccis. What makes my brain hurt more than this film is that one day a movie will come along that makes this look like Herbie, I just hope that I'm there to see it.

"Have any of these drivers read the rule book?"
verisimilitude is a millstone.

it's an extremely effective piece of pop art, DESPITE probably being a terrible adaptation (the sheen and direction make it one of a kind)

There isn't a single thing I can dislike about this film. The set pieces are wonderful, all races are beautifully executed, the plot is perfectly told, and I just to start wanting to build that old Hotwheels track I had running around my house again.

For anyone not under the age of 13, this movie takes a very specific sense of humor to truly enjoy. Thankfully I have such a taste. The movie is impossibly colorful and wickedly fun. The plot is extremely basic but then again, so was the TV show. This movie is entirely underrated.

A new kind of cinema.

Savienojot kopā spēles «Trackmania» braukšanas stilu, «Wreck it Ralph» sižetu un «Scott Pilgrim vs the World» vizuālo izpildīju iegūst «Speed Racer».
Bet tā kā abas augstākminētās filmas iznāca labu laiku pēc šīs filmas, tad jāsaka, ka diezgan oriģināla pieeja, kur arī slēpjas tas šarms vērojot visas varavīksnes krāsas divu stundu garumā.PS. Man vienīgajam liekas, ka Emīls Hirščs nemaz nenoveco?

So much CGI is used and is used so well that the whole thing really feels like a cartoon much like the source material.
Which is a big reason why I liked this movie.
The main reason I didn't like about this was Speed Racer's little brother who's name I cannot remember.
He seemed pretty annoying and everything he said made me want to punch something.
Well actually, no one's dialogue in this movie really did anything for me. Why wouldn't I give it a lower rating? The reason I didn't give it like 2 1/2 stars is because the CGI is outrageous and works wonderfully, the way the movie feels cartoony is great, and movie had my interest for the 2 hour run time with each physics-defying race.
