The force is with you, young Skywalker, but you are not a Jedi yet.
-Darth VaderIt's often said that The Empire Strikes Back is the greatest Star Wars film simply because it's dark. You've heard it before, people telling you it's the best because "the ending is so dark". While I do think this is the best film out of the series, I don't agree with that reason. I think the movie is dark as the result of what actually makes the movie so great. I will attempt to explain my point of view.
In A New Hope our heroes were part of a story that was bigger then them. It was about the Empire trying to wipe out…

Star Wars is Star Wars. You know what you're gonna get when you watch it! It is both beautiful, and amazing at the same time, something that not too many films can accomplish. Especially back then. Looking into details on each scene and each set they filmed on was truly remarkable. The amount of time and effort they must have put in is completely unfathomable and should not be forgotten. I think the effects and figures would still look great if it was released in the past generation. Overall, I loved everything about it completely!

FInally got to watch the Blu Ray version. It looks and sounds fantastic, and the changes are not too offensive. I still don't care for the extended snow monster scene -- it's creepier when you can't see it. I confess I kind of like the improvements to the Cloud City scenes that he seems to tweak every time.
I still hold to my VHS copies as the "real" versions. But this one's not at all bothersome.
It occurs to me that I could probably write a full series of comments about this movie, but what could possibly be said that hasn't been said? If you don't get it by now, you never will. And if you do get it, what can I add?

Still my favorite Star Wars movie ever!

Astoundingly great, but feels more and more like an episode in the middle of the trilogy the more and more I see it.

One of my favourite films of all time. Classic cinema

The fans favorite and certainly the darker of the series, if you think of the trilogy as a full arc this is where things get really shitty, and it works, it has the advantage of knowing there's a sequel for sure, so it's not forced to tie up all loose ends and also is not forced to give a great victory for the good guys, really survival is the most they achieve.

Forgot to post this as I fell asleep for the last 15 minutes. Still can't fault a single thing about it though, except for the fact it was a newer version where they replace Boba Fett's voice with a super fucking shitty New Zealand accent. Fuck that.
