“Hey, you know what's scarier than not believing in God? Believing in him. I mean, really believing in him. It's a fucking terrifying thought.”
-Frankie Paige (Patricia Arquette)When deciding to make a film concerning religion, you walk a very fun line, especially when you attempt to delve into the horror genre too. You don’t want your film to feel too meek and lacking in its execution, but likewise you don’t want to stray into the realm of mockery or fanaticism. The problem with Stigmata, the 1999 film from Rupert Wainwright, is that it slips into both in equal measure, sometimes attempting to be a serious exploration of corruption in the Vatican, other times feeling like a ham-fisted silly thriller.…

I will forgive all its negative traits for just one more giggle or smile from the lovely Patricia Arquette.

Wildly visually inventive (perhaps excessively so) but also both camp and silly in unending quantities.

Interesting premise.. It's scary, but still doesn't hold a candle to exorcist. This is a stylish film, but little else.

It was almost good enough but didn't quite get there.
