Reviews of Sucker Punch 2011

I liked bits a pieces but not the whole thing.
My man Snyder really knows how to direct and he crafts some stunning pieces of movie art which make this film visually interesting and entertaining but...for me the the story didn't win me over, so I found it a bit of a chore to watch at times.

If you want to be a dumb movie, be a dumb movie. If you want to be a smart movie, be a smart movie. What bothers me about Sucker Punch is that it can't pick a side. It thinks it's being smart, poetic, deep, etc, yet it's covered in so much stupidity and inept storytelling that you can't take it seriously. However, you can't view it as a mindless action movie because the entire thing is so dead-face serious that…

A dream-like experience that people seem to think is really dumb, which I don't necessarily agree with, only because it seems like there's some sort of deeper meaning here and if I agree with that, it would be unfair considering I don't fully understand it.
All of that being said, it's pretty cool and has some great visuals.

It's certainly not going to win any oscars, but it's a fantastic example of directors doing whatever the hell they want.
Robot cyborgs? Check. Steampunk nazi zombies? You got it. Minigun wielding stone samurai? What the hell! let's throw it in there!
This scrambled mish-mash of ideas is a complete and utter mess, but the kind of mess that makes you shout 'hell yeah!' and wish more films were like this.
Abandoning story for style, Zack Snyder goes all out… -

first time around I wasn't too keen, lacking in substance- all sheen. second time around, opinion's the same- Snyder's talent remains to be seen

Hadn't actually watched this since I originally saw it at the cinema. I was initially sold on the fantasy sequences which didn't disappoint at the time, due to the fact it was in the cinema.
On a smaller screen, it did kind of work better overall I think. The soundtrack is still excellent and the film overall is more watchable. I've read a lot of the intricate descriptions of the plot and it's deeper meanings online as well, but i wasn't really trying too hard to look for any of that.
For a small screen fantasy film, I still quite like it.

For all the babes, flashy FX, and big action sequences, this.... thing.... falls terribly flat. It tries to be meaningful, with some sort of message, but really it's just soft porn dressed up as an action flick for teen fan-boys of this sort of schlock. I just couldn't buy into this mess. Barely watchable.
Sorry, Baby Doll.

I find it interesting that almost all the pop songs in this picture are covers. It is indicative of the picture as a whole. One person covering another person's idea. Every scene, or idea in this picture is taken from somewhere else. Obviously filtered through the structure of a video game and Synder's distinct visual style, this picture takes all those influences or sources and makes a remix version of them. Was it enjoyable? Not really. It is a constant…
