So I decided to see this film again, since for some reason I had the urge to do so, and because Caker Baker told me it had the third highest amount of "F" words in recorded film(i don't suppose that's a good reason though). There were a few differences that I noticed from the TV version I previously saw. First of all there was an excessive amount of erotic material, than there was in the version I saw, which sort of made me dislike this movie a bit more. The thing that I really like about this film though is Spike lee's explosive dioloug and sort of family based characters, and of course Adrien Brody's portrayal of the punk-rock kid Richie. This film went down half a star for me, but its still my third favorite Lee film, or should i say, Joint.

Fairly decent, but way too self-indulgent and at least 20 minutes too long.

One of Spike Lee's worst films. I originally put off watching the film when it was first released but interest in the subject matter ultimately brought me back. Lee's expected stylish flourishes are present, but other than showing off, do little for the film. I found most of the characters to be very difficult to care about. What Lee is missing here is a good way to hook the audience with this story. Especially with 142 minutes, you would expect something memorable. Other than the attention to detail, and the promise of an interesting serial killer story, this film is a waste of time.

Defiantly my favorite Spike Lee film. Mainly because the racism issue isn't in your face like a lot of his films. Summer Of Sam follows the lives of an Italian neighborhood in South Bronx. The soundtrack, cinematography and the way that most of the scenes are executed are just brilliant. My only beef wit this movie are the scenes with the killer, (ex. shooting the dog, and the dog talking to him). They just felt so out of place, and kind of ridiculous and silly. If the movie kept those scenes out, it would be near perfect. This movie deserves more attention, it's extremely underrated.

What a mess. The movie is all over the place. Even though there are good performances, I couldn't get invested in anyone. Having the backdrop of the Son of Sam killer didn't really heighten the stories of the characters. It's not like the heat in Do the Right Thing.
The movie is very good at replicating the 1970's.

This is definitely a mess. A huge clusterfuck mess. It feels like eighteen different movies colliding together fighting for the spotlight. But it is eighteen pretty outstanding movies. John Leguizamo and Mira Sorvino's fight set to Abba's Dancing Queen is one of the greatest/funniest/campiest things I've ever seen. If it had focused on one aspect of the story and minimized the others it could have been a stronger more focused film, but I sincerely doubt it would have been as much fun.

I haven't seen this movie since it was a new release on VHS. I remember not liking it very much and having case of the flu at the time. I think I was bit too young to really appreciate what the film was trying to say; all I saw was a bunch of idiots screaming, swearing and fighting. Watching it for the second time I absolutely loved it. And picked the perfect time to watch it too; on a hot Saturday afternoon; very appropriate as the movie…

Sporadic, panoramic view of the most loved and hated city; this mundane description can only do the film justice.
