Even though its tone is all over the place, Super still manages to get away with its cocktail of pitch black comedy, genre satire and compelling drama.
Love him or hate him, Rainn Wilson is the perfect choice for this role. His off beat sense of comedy works really well here, but it is in the smaller, more dramatic moments where I found him to be absolutely convincing. His prayer scene was a thing of brutal, honest, ugly beauty.
Ellen Page's hysterics annoyed me from time to time, but I guess they served their purpose as they helped shape her character. She has great comedy timing, which she proves again here. She and Wilson bounce off of each other really…

Everything starring Ellen Page is awesome! I only just realised..I mean:
- Inception
- Juno (shut up I like it.)
- Hard Candy
- Whip It!Anyway, after that little revelation, I recently watched Super again for about the seventh time, and it never gets old. Not once. No, it may not be perfect, it has it's flaws, but out of any movie ever, this is one of the only films I could watch forever, non-stop. I love James Gunn's hilarious writing, I love the "Holy Avenger" scenes, I love Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page as a duo, I love everything about the whole film, it's one of the only films I will honestly give the rare title of "perfect".
Shut up, haters!

Fuck Yeah.
Ellen Page being awesome.
Rainn Wilson being vengeful.
Kevin Bacon likes eggs.
Fuck Yeah.

*SPOILER*
This wasn't a particularly easy watch. But maybe that was the point?
The director seems unable to decide whether he is making a superhero satire or a sick joke. Super is not exactly super, but its sometimes enjoyable. Sometimes entertaining, sometimes funny, and sometimes clever. Ellen Page's brilliant wacky energy is not used enough, and her surprising early death is a bit unforgivable.
There is some really interesting ideas here, and moments of awesomeness. But most of these are In between the panels.

This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Man, this movie is a god damn punch in the gut. Is there anything more naked and honest than Frank on his knees cursing God for making him unloved and stupid and ugly? That scene is hardcore. This whole movie is hardcore. Love it.

I can honestly say this is the weirdest film I have seen in a long time. It's the movie Kick Ass said it was and yet didn't have the balls to be. Would have got an extra half star except for the fact that the first 20 mins are rather dull - but stick with it. Its tone is all over the place. Part comedy-part horror.

'Shut up crime' so much better than the ludicrously overrated Kick Ass

Super indeed

Although the "moral" of the story is refreshing, the execution and everything else is terrible.

I held off on this since Rainn Wilson has never impressed me much outside of "The Office". I WAS A FOOL.
The slow start, which would normally be a demerit, instead is a great set-up for the intensity that is to come. Everything after the initial tentacle-filled "vision" just kept getting better and better.
Ellen Page. Can I talk about Ellen Page for a minute? She give a perfectly unhinged performance. In her first scene I was mildly intrigued by her character, but she kept escalating until I was hoping to see an entire Boltie sequel. Perfect to the end.
It turns out Rainn can kind of pull this off? For a few scenes he doesn't quite sell it, but the lines he nails are so good that it erased any issues I had with parts of his performance.
Fantastic superhero movie, and with an ending that managed to wrap things up in a believable way.
