What kind of film do you get when your two leads are taking shots of scotch between takes. When Fisher Stevens starts writing his own lines. And when you’re under tight deadlines to rush and finish the film in time only to release it up against Jurassic Park. You get this masterpiece. The mushroom kingdom is in trouble when the Princess is kidnapped by the evil Bowser. Only Mario & Luigi, two Italian plumbers can rescue her traveling though this mystical land fighting evil turtle and squid-type creatures. Wait, sorry that’s the video game.
The mushroom kingdom is replaced by Dinohatten. Kind of an alternative reality of New York where dinosaurs were evolved into humanoids. It’s hard to believe that Tom… -

Love Nintendo's Mario, but this is shit.

Let’s face it when it comes to gamers we will almost always be disappointed by the big screen adaptions of our favorite video games. One needs to look no further then one of the very first attempts to make a movie out of not only a popular video game franchise but perhaps the most popular video game franchise of all time, The Super Mario Bros.
Everything about this movie is bad. Sure there are some it’s so bad its good moments but they are so few and far between. It also seemed like they went out of their way to get as much wrong as possible. One has to look no further than the fact that the goomas are eight…

A pretty "out there" kids film that's surprisingly watchable and fun.

A horrible, horrible highly entertaining one star movie that's such a failure on every level you have to wonder if the directors were in complete denial, covering each others backs and refusing to see where they were headed while struggling through it or just were too far into production when they realized they needed to pull the plug on the whole project.
In their defense though, they attempted to adapt one of the story-wise most difficult games out there and deserve some credit for giving it a shot. Compare Super Mario Bros. to other Nintendo games of the same era: Metroid could easily be made (reversed back) into a horror in space type movie (Alien was in fact a heavy…

Yes, it's daft, it's harmless fluff and pure escapism, and loosley based on the Super Mario computer games, but it's a fun film adventure for the family.
Children will enjoy it for the adventure and out of this world effects and stunts, while adults will enjoy an easy lride with the video-game inspired plot and performances from Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi and Dennis Hopper as Koopa..
A great film and one that has been overlooked by most critics and lovers of film. Enjoy it, and leave your brain on hold for 90mins of Super Mario Bros fun.

What I like to call "The BLADE RUNNER of the 90s"

All I learned from this movie was that the Koopas were the ones behind 9/11.

How do you describe this movie? Well, the words 'incomprehensible' and 'shite' leap readily to hand. An absolute mess start to finish, and one can only assume the result of weapons-grade LSD poisoning. It might as well be called 'Stuart Mario Bros.' for all it's relationship to the game franchise it alleges to be based on. I once caught the second half of this on TV and actually thought it didn't make sense because I'd missed the start *gibbers manically*

This movie is terrible and I love it

Very interesting movie the music that done by Alan Silvestri is really got lot of real action to the film which is loosely based on the video games of the same names, it may not be successful as Jurassic Park released in the same year but it was fun the ride in the air pumps the car chase final fight with King Koopa, Mario and Luigi even the special effects on Yoshi look more realistic then any other animatronics, I know Samantha Mathis is Bibi Besch's Daughter but I didn't know Fiona Shaw who played Patunia Dursley in Harry Potter was in the movie and I'm sure that film will be reboot someday.

Worst game based movie ever. Oh but it doesn't really seem to have a lot to do with the games... hmm.

I've got to stop watching these trashy movies out of this misplaced sense of completism - this is simply awful in every way. The execution is adequate, perhaps - I mean, I get the goofy, comic vibe they were going for - but all good intentions are drowned by this being so horrifically and relentlessly misconceived from the first frame. Far worse than the fact that the filmmakers absolutely misunderstood the charm and allure of Super Mario is the fact that the story choices made here are the softest, laziest choices imaginable.
Not to mention: "Mario Mario"!? Really?
At least Dennis Hopper seems to be having some kind of fun here (unlike in his star turn in 'Star Truckers').
Don't bother with this. It really is as bad as people say it is.
