Superman IV: The Quest for Peace Superman IV: The Quest for Peace
1987 Directed by Sidney J. Furie
Synopsis
Nuclear Power. In the best hands, it is dangerous. In the hands of Lex Luthor, it is pure evil. This is Superman's greatest battle. And it is for all of us.
With global superpowers engaged in an increasingly hostile arms race, Superman leads a crusade to rid the world of nuclear weapons. But Lex Luthor, recently sprung from jail, is declaring war on the Man of Steel and his quest to save the planet. Using a strand of Superman's hair, Luthor synthesizes a powerful ally known as Nuclear Man and ignites an epic battle spanning Earth and space.

Just no. -
Nearly erased the knowledge that this film exists then i see it on this site. So poor but gave a fair shot at promoting world piece.

This isn't as insultingly stupid as the first two and it's not as confusingly about Richard Pryor as the third. But it's still pretty dumb and boring.
There's a scene where Superman and Clark go on a double date with two broads, so he has to keep leaving and changing into the other person like a Three's Company episode (with none of the actual humor).
And Nuclear Man takes a lady into space and she doesn't freeze or suffocate or explode or anything, so that's weird.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's just shit.
So bad, that if you were to throw it in the bin, all the other rubbish in there would climb out.

What is up with Gene Hackman's hair in that photo? He looks like the wind just pushed his toupee to the back of his head.

Despite all of your warning I finally got around to completing the film series and the fourth instalment was every bit as bad as I’d been warned – and worse than I could’ve even imagined. It’s a real shame, because the sensational first film did very well to establish a good set of characters, an impressive cast and endless narrative possibilities. Unfortunately, not enough thought went in to the sequels and not one of them has been able to match up, resulting in an ultimately poor franchise that is certainly best forgotten. The greatest crime of this series is that it makes Superman Returns look like a decent film. Gladly I can still hold faith in Richard Donner’s cut of Superman 2 and look forward to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel that can only be an improvement.

Obviously the much lower budget results in many "not so special" effects. It's also a visually ugly film. Most of the performances are good, but the dialogue they are forced to speak is often eye-rollingly bad and not amusing as intended.

It tries but not even the brilliant Christopher Reeve or the presence of Gene Hackman can save this poorly-produced drivel. A shame but they should have left the series well alone after the Richard Pryor ass-kissing excercise that was Superman III. In fact, they should have left it alone after Superman II but hey ho.

I can remember clearly when this movie came out. Summer, 1987. My sister had a birthday and I convinced her it would be fun to see this movie. I was wrong.
I was just a kid then, so what did I know right? Nope.
What happened? The film starts off okay, with Superman saving some people and then heading to the old Smallville home briefly, which brings back memories. But then we get a confusing number of subplots.
Superman pledges to end nuclear arms. Okay. Noble. Then there is a love subplot between Mariel Hemingway, as Perry White's daughter Lacy, and Clark Kent. Okay, Clark is often ignored. On top of that we have Lenny Luthor, an annoying nephew character…

Unwatchable.

" It's common knowledge you hate children and animals, Luthor."
Superman 4 simply put is not an intelligent, well thought out film. It's actually quite silly, heavy handed, and poorly written compared to the first two Superman films. There is nothing subtle about the way they handle the subject of a looming nuclear war or....anything for that matter. Nothing is well developed or explained, the pacing is awful and is actually quite difficult to keep track of, motivations are extremely sketchy and the logic behind most of the movie is quite flawed. All that being said Superman 4 is light and doesn't take itself too seriously. The comedy is played up a lot this time around and some of it… -
Although it has a few too many silly and unsubtle moments, Superman 4 is still a well intentioned, fun take on the Man of Steel.

I haven't seen this as a kid...but even then I realized what a cheap, boring and dreadful last-wheeze for cash this was.
