It's not a terrible film, it's just a bit snooze worthy. Take Michael Crichton's Sphere and put in space and that's essentially what you've got with Supernova. With this films history of multiple directors and visions it's hard to put a finger on who made what mistake but it was inevitable that it wouldn't be a masterpiece. It's an average at best space action/thriller that borrows heavily from films and stories that are much better than it. I think this was the point of no return for Walter Hill, the moment when he got sick of being messed around by Hollywood producers and it has sadly robbed us of one of the better directors of action who had a string of very good films throughout his career and has only made 3 films in the 13 years since this debacle.

Assembly-line outer space tosh more competent than I expected; it knows better than to overstay its welcome. (52%)

This isn't 'bad' per se, just really really mediocre. Some nice ideas wrapped up in an improbable scenario. Performances are okay, though leaning heavily on intense hushed tones, which gets annoying. The antagonist is almost entirely without charm, unless you're into bland frat-boy jocks. Narratively lazy, with uninspired visuals. Some of the editing is interesting - the crosscutting between the jump to hyperspace (or whatever they call it in this movie) and the foreshadowing glimpses of action is really quite evocative. But the whole sex & procreation subtext is ineptly handled by the director and is never elevated above titillation.
Not the worst scifi movie I've ever seen (that might be Tron:Legacy) but not the best either.

A film that is a little choppy due to the fact it had too many cooks in the kitchen. Thomas Lee (aka Walter Hill) is credited as director but this film has two uncredited directors with one being Francis Ford Coppola. However it doesn't feel disjointed, as the film strikes a coherent tone and visual style. If anything it is the narrative structure that is the main problem. It runs through the familiar hoops of a science fiction action adventure film. But it lacks tension due to the predictability of the story beats and the fact that the antagonist is completely underwhelming. However the ideas within the film are at least interesting with the artifact's true nature being a highlight.…
