The combination of material and director that results in 2007's "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" is nothing short of outstanding. Tim Burton takes Stephen Sondheim's comic-gothic musical and creates a blood-soaked, sumptuously designed and photographed, gothic masterwork. It is a horror musical with a comic lilt that keeps the violence and jet-sprays of claret from being oppressive.
The cast, led by a seething Johnny Depp, is ideal. While the entire troupe may not have the greatest of all voices, all the players sing at least servicably, and Depp communicates the rage and regret of his anti-hero with each sung turn-of-phrase. Each of Burton's actors look as like they stepped out of a twisted, Dickensian sketchbook.

Por unas razones u otras, no encontraba el momento de ver esta película de Burton que dejé pasar en su día empochecido por la soberana ristra de mierdas que estaba encadenando. Craso error: es la única película decente que ha dirigido (no cuento Frankenweenie porque me temo que su labor como director ahí es solo nominal) desde Sleepy Hollow. Aunque los grandes valores de la película le venían servidos en bandeja (la banda sonora, el grand-guignol, el argumento, la ambientación), Burton demuestra gusto a la hora de encadenar canciones y arrojo en la puesta en escena de los crímenes, gloriosamente sangrientos hasta extremos insólitos en una película comercial. Solo me cojea un poco la pareja protagonista, que paradójicamente, quizás imprimen demasiada humanidad a unos personajes que deberían ser más despiadados y decadentes.

TAKE NOTE HOOPER, THIS IS HOW TO MAKE A GOOD MUSICAL. Seriously though the music in this film is fantastic, and id the only Tim Burton film I love, let alone like(still have to see Ed Wood). Depp plays the role perfectly, and so does Helen. My favorite musical(even if I have only seen a few)

Fantastic. Musical, bloody, and the perfect mix of character and plot development. Incredibly well written, performed, and just a genuine must see.

Tim Burton made a very "different" kind of film. He decided to craft a film that mixed the musical genre with the horror genre. Was it innovative? Imaginative? Brilliant? No. It's just fucking stupid.
Horror and musical are two completely different genres that should never mix together. People watch musicals for something light, dazzling, and energetic. People watch horror for something heavy, bleak, and terrifying. These two elements just don't work together and it shows. If you're gonna do something this stupid, at least make it fun but it's just a self-indulgent style over substance vehicle for Depp and Burton. Wasn't sure it would be for me - it being a musical and all. But I loved it. Dark, lovely, extra bloody. And the songs didn't get on my nerves, so that was a bonus.

Esta es la autobiografía de Tim Burton.
La idea de Sweeney Todd es TAN Tim Burton que da ganas de reír. Cuando me entere de que era una adaptación no lo pude creer.
El ambiente, la historia y la música se complementan de manera perfecta. Incluso el humor se complemento con todos los aspectos de la película como si de eso dependiera (Ya feel me?)
... Y con todo pudo fácilmente acabar pareciendo una parodia y no lo hizo, es asquerosa y extrañamente poética. Sweeney Todd es uno de los personajes más memorables de la carrera de Johnny Depp y una de las mejores películas de Burton. Con este tipo de películas es que te das cuenta de su capacidad como director.
