Symphonie diagonale
1924 Directed by Viking Eggeling
Synopsis
A tilted figure, consisting largely of right angles at the beginning, grows by accretion, with the addition of short straight lines and curves which sprout from the existing design. The figure vanishes and the process begins again with a new pattern, each cycle lasting one or two seconds. The complete figures are drawn in a vaguely Art Deco style and could be said to resemble any number of things, an ear, a harp, panpipes, a grand piano with trombones, and so on, only highly stylized. The tone is playful and hypnotic.

Avant Garde is a genre of film I am still warming up to. I watched this animated experimental short with no sound as recommended. Made in 1924, it would have been originally without sound as well. But one also must consider that being made that long ago the technical achievement that was put in to create these 8 minutes.
The diagonal shapes and distortions that faded onto and disappeared from the screen were suppose to be representative of music and in a way they do look like music notes. So it is with these images that the viewer is suppose to imagine the music rather than hear it. Which made it interesting but with its short runtime it still felt overlong.

I recommend you check out korine1666's review of film since he watched it without sound (the way it was supposed to be experienced) and offers some insight into the effect that creates. I didn't realize this and watched it with sound, and after realizing that it was supposed to be a silent film a lot more makes sense (the music didn't complement the images very well in the version I saw). The film is a really unique piece of animation and it expresses a lot of fluid motion through the movement of lines. It is very hypnotic, and I didn't even realize that 8 minutes had gone by once it finished.

A hypnotic visual representation of music. Really pretty accessible in terms of non narrative cinema, and a lot of fun. Worth a look (I recommend watching it on mute as it originally did not have sound. As it is a visual interpretation of music, if you watch carefully and are imaginative, the music should be created in your head.) A true proto-music video.

It is overlong by about two minutes, but this early experimental film is impressive and beautiful in its creation and erasure of various shapes and forms. Geometrical masterpiece, cinematic curiosity.

An interesting, if strange, experiment in representing music without sound. An important abstract animation, but probably mostly of interest to film buffs and not casual viewers. Read full review.
