I had an ex who reminded me of Tank Girl; she was the same quirky mix of emo punk toughness and manic childish coquettishness. She also had a skinhead and one green eye and one blue. She had the big fuck off boots and she also had scars, but they were always self inflicted. Eeek.
Anyway, enough of the personal...
I read some of the Tank Girl graphic novels/comic strips in the 90s, but never bothered wit the film, principally because the stench of just how bad it was travelled fast and it travelled widespread, filling every word of mouth and every review and hanging unspoken over several publicity interviews with its star Lori Petty. So in the end, I…

Atrocious on just about every level. I'd pile on the hate, but I couldn't be less passionate about ripping it. I'd say there isn't a single redeeming quality, but I did enjoy the opening credits and Naomi Watts is always a plus. However, Lori Petty is a black void on screen, plain and simple. There isn't a character there, so who she is pretending to be has to rely exclusively on natural charisma. This was a mistake that backfired. Watching her interact with Malcolm McDowell is the most excruciating insult to a master actor I've seen this year. They even managed to make Naomi Watts downright ugly. This is no easy task, but somehow they done did it, the bastards. I wanted to turn it off 30 minutes in, and after 45, I left it on in the background while doing more important things. A monotonous waste of time.

It is clear that Edgar Wright learnt a lot from Tank Girl. Throw everything at the camera. Unfortunately, he didn't learn enough, as Tank Girl is better than Scott Pilgrim.
It's probably wrong of me to compare these films. But fuck it. It's a thought I had all through.
Tank Girl is not brilliant. But, it's amazing soundtrack, and its amazing lead performance ensure that I had more fun watching this than I have from watching 4 of the 8 Batman movies.
She's in for along and glorious career that Lori Perry...

There are a bunch of things that I liked in the movie, but for some reason it didn't completely work for me. I think it was mostly the editing. 17 years after this movie came out, the style and speed of the editing for a frenetic movie has evolved. So while I liked a lot of the set pieces and Lori Petty, I kept getting bored by the movie lingering during scenes.
And I did really enjoy Petty's manic performance.

There are two things that are especially hilarious about this movie:
1) How Lori Petty manages to set the image of the quirky chick that has blossomed into becoming an outright stereotype within the last three or so years. a million miles ahead of everything and now somehow manages to feel like a satirization of that archetype.
2) How clearly, astoundingly chopped up it is by a studio stealing away its property from the filmmaker. You can hear pages of dialogue and action being torn in half.
This movie is the perfect snapshot of how much of a day-glo clusterfuck the '90s were. The only thing that come close is Faith no More's "Falling to Pieces" video. I love 'em both.

Very silly, very camp and very enjoyable early 90s comic book adaption. As long as you don't take this seriously then you should enjoy it. What's not to like? A great soundtrack, Malcolm Macdowell hamming it up, and a very early appearance by Naomi Watts.

I came in home from a party, fairly drunk, and this was an impulse watch.
Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin consider this film a shit-stain on their work. In the comics, Tank Girl is a violent, sex-mad, alcoholic oddball who lives in the outback of Australia with her mutant kangaroo boyfriend. She is a wanted woman after her failure to deliver colostomy bags to the president caused him to shit himself on live TV. Other acts include killing a lot of people, accidentally killing a lot of people, flashing her tits, and dropping an ungodly amount of Neighbours references. The comics are great.
The film is nothing really like this.
If you look at it as it's own thing though,…

This week's Coolidge Midnight offering. Beautiful print. Animated segments are particularly tactile.

The most underrated comic book movie ever made. Funny as hell and consistently entertaining.

If someone distilled the 90's lethargy into an abstract, roughly two hour film, Tank Girl would probably be the result.
Everything you've read about it is pretty much true. All the good and bad included.
Jesus though, I just couldn't connect. If you find your in, I congratulate you.

Idiotic, objectification, low budget, inconsistent and foolish. The only thing that keeps it somewhat durable is the humour.

Trash. But still funny enough. Sorry about the yak though.
