I LOVE PHIL COLLINS AND I LOVE THIS FILM. -
This film is actually excellent. I hadn't seen it since childhood, and now I remember why I liked it. It wasn't the jokes--they were childish and fairly inane and I recognized that back then as well. It was the plot, the characters, and the music. The drama of this story is alternately light and dark but always has a strong sense of character and narrative drive--Tarzan is actually a BRILLIANT drama, with some catchy songs. Also President Grant from Scandal is Tarzan. He would be Tarzan.

For some reason I completely missed Tarzan when it first arrived, probably because of all the Star Wars: Episode I-hype at the time. I would've been twelve that year.
It's not a bad movie at all. Certainly far, far better than Hercules for instance. There are some rough parts to it though, and it's dangerously close to becoming just a Phil Collins showcase, when he narrates the story continuously through song, blah. I don't even like his voice to begin with.
In an explosive opening sequence, we're immediately thrown onto a shipwreck on an island outside of Africa, where a family and their young baby are forced to go into the jungle and settle there. They build themselves a tree…

Released when Disney were on a steady decline, both commercially and creatively, Tarzan is a perfect illustration of where the studio was at the time. It is a film with beautiful animation and excellent art direction (the sinewy appearance of Tarzan and the fluid action is perfect) yet marred by a terrible sidekick and insipid songs.
Disney animated features have always worked to a formula, Tarzan is one of the last films of the late ‘90s to follow a formula that was looking very tired indeed. That formula being take a classic piece of literature, add a celebrity voiced sidekick and music from a popular musician. Sadly, where once they would attract talent like Robin Williams they are now lumbered…

Beautiful animation and Jane is such a great character, too bad Clayton is a bit sucky. Yet the animation is damn sexy and makes up for it.

This movie is my childhood. It is most likely my favorite movie ever.

When Phil Collins agreed to do the soundtrack, he must have demanded that no less than 20 songs be in the film. From the start Phil threatens to haunt you within the film and he makes good on his promise. Half-joking aside, this is a good Disney film, not great, but enjoyable. It has characteristics that try one's patience, I'm looking at you Phil and Rosie, but in many ways I'm glad it was made. The animation and action within the film sometimes pop off the screen as if one was watching it in 3-D.

Disney spent a lot on this flick and it shows; it brims with motion, colour, character, and style.

One of my childhood favorites still holds up as a great, heroic and adventurous Disney film with beautiful and fluid animation and a fantastic soundtrack. The mixture of silly and childish comedy with emotional and serious scenes is used incredibly effectively leading to a strong attachment to the narrative and characters. I am a huge fan of Phil Collins and makes this soundtrack one of my favorites of Disney's. The voice animation and sound design is fantastic in particular Minnie Driver as Jane who I feel really sets a perfect tone and personality to her character. Overall, whilst not one of Disney's crowning masterpieces', Tarzan is an adventurous, heroic and emotional story which still stands all these years since being one of my childhood favorites. (p.s. It is the first film I ever saw in the cinema at the age of 5)
