Set in a mountainous Italian town and elegantly lensed, 'The American' is a romantically stylish thriller with a subdued mellow pace.
George Clooney's redemptive assassin is cool as a cucumber whilst Violante Placido's nude form is jam hot. -
I just bought the blu ray so I could watch with the Anton Corbijn commentary track, and that is what I did last night.
It starts off interesting, with Corbijn talking about about some of the influences and references in the movie, and telling us certain details about the production of the film etc etc. But eventually it turns into a lot of narration of the story, none of which we can really pay attention to because the volume of the film is almost muted while Corbijn is speaking. We sparsely see tiny bits of the movie, but it's mainly the audio track. The amount of dialogue is scarce enough to begin with.
I really love the movie but even I'm not sure the commentary version is worth watching. There are a few nice pieces of information throughout, but nothing too deep.

Been meaning to watch this for a while now and the opening scene sets up the film perfectly. The cinematography in this film is breathtaking and is a reason alone to watch it. you can really appreciate Anton Corbijn effort to maximise every shot and detail in this film. It won't be to everyones taste though, as its a very slow burner. Before watching it I thought it was going to have more high profile action in it as its about a hit man but that wasn't the case. Its more about the character slowing down and trying to leave his old life behind him. Clooney plays this role perfectly but I just wanted a little bit more from the plot and character in terms of backstory. Looking back after a few days I still enjoyed this film and if you can appreciate the skill involved in making a film that looks this good then its well worth a watch.

An absorbing and beautifully shot slow paced thriller with Clooney pulling another sterling and affecting performance out of the bag. He really is very good at these type of characters. After I recently watched him in the fantastic Michael Clayton, I immediately wanted to see The American again. Although his character is a closed book we see enough of Jack's inner anguish and emotion to really buy into his character, his situation and his decisions.
The stylish cinematography and the amazing backdrop of the village of Abruzzo really turn this into a feast for the eyes. Every shot with precision and focus. It is a visually stunning film. The poster and marketing really did not help this films cause, If…

Most people i've spoken to about this film complain about how "slow" it is which I find strange and kinda sad. Anton Corbijn is an endearing director/cinematographer who takes his time and loves the mystique that can surround a single shot and character. I love films with minimal dialogue that take their time and aren't afraid to jump in at the end of a story. AND what's particularly sweet about this is Clooney's portrayal which is nothing like the usual charming schmuck seen in Ocean's 30, 45 and 73. In fact this film is as anti Hollywood as they come which is so refreshing in an age where cinema relies on so many 3D bells and CGI whistles that the senses end up overloaded. Let the image breath like in The American so we can soak it in ourselves without it being forced upon us.

A sturdy production of an oft-told tale -- the assassin doing one last job and discovering that retiring might not be so easy. George Clooney is rock solid, as always, and the Italian hill town that provides the film's setting is gorgeous. Still, I like my hit-man travelogues to be a little more lively. Speaking of which, it might be time to go ahead and buy In Bruges on Blu.

Influenced by Melville, Alain Delon and many other stalwarts of European arthouse cinema, unfortunately "The American" never quite delivers. It sets up a great premise, but i thought it ultimately lacked any real thematic or aesthetic depth. Not bad, but could have been better.

Bom filme, parado, mas interessante.
Não é um filme de ação desenfreada.

Imagine Antonioni's "L'Avventura" without the suspense, the innovations, the tempo (or beautiful lack thereof), or, indeed, anything interesting, and you have this film. Clooney is a fair actor, but this is just void. I usually like films with a bit of space in them, but this is really just void and null. Avoid. Go for Corbijn's "Control" instead if you need his films.

Väga vaoshoitud performance George Clooney poolt, mis andis the Americanile huvitava kiiksu juurde. Tegemist on mõnusa mõtliku tempoga trilleriga, mis sobib lõõgastava õlle kõrvale.

Absolutely loved it, the tension is palpable, the pace is very distinct, it's slow and deep. Clooney's acting is great, he does so little and delivers so much, sometimes his expression will barely change, but his eyes tell a whole different emotion.
