I read a review describing The Art of Getting By as a spoof movie without the self-awareness and it is a perfect description for this trite slice of dishonest bullshit. Freddie Highmore, attempting to graduate from those sweet child roles that made him a small fortune, takes a massive misstep into twee indie territory. Highmore plays a 17-year old teen who reads Camus, watches the film’s of Malle and is full of fatalistic angst. Basically he is a massive walking cliche just like every other annoying character in this sorry excuse for a film.
Writer-director, Gavin Wiesen, may have convinced himself that this is a profound and meaningful work of art but the only person he has fooled is himself.…

This movie is pretty interesting. I mean, it IS a movie about two teens who hang out a lot and suddenly find themselves confused about their feelings, but it was actually pretty good. (I know right, weird)
I don't have that much sympathy towards Roberts but Highmore was great in this film. He portrayed the quirky confused adolescent very accurately and left you no other option but to sympathize with him. And Roberts wasn't bad either.
Teen movies nowadays almost always suck and I'm not actually sure this can be called a teen movie, but as it is about two teens, I'm going to call it an indie teen movie anyway. My point is, that this is surprisingly good for… -
We all have that one predictable friend. You know, the one who always sticks to the same formula, always runs their life through the same routine. You know exactly what they’re going to do, 25 steps before they even do it. Well, if that friend was a film, it would be ‘The Art of Getting By’. Filled with the most obvious plot points, I can’t help but wonder if I had actually seen the film before, considering I predicted the majority of the film about 25 minutes in. I was praying, hoping to god that I could have been proven wrong, to just have them throw in a twist, or do something different for Christ sake! Nope. That did not…

'The Art of Getting By' isn't a big hollywood film, there is no action, no special effects. It is however an independent movie driven by story like other films like '500 Days of Summer'' or 'Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist'. It's not out to shock you or be another cheesy high school film, just a down to earth real life love story. Something that could happen to you.
Now young Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) is all grown up in this drama.
George (Highmore) an artist who lacks any motivation, has never completed a days homework in his life. He feels that life is meaningless and there's no point worrying about schools or assignments. After being put…

I am surprised I did not see the warning on the title: A film that just gets by, barely.

όχι.

From the start, I identified myself with this movie, with the main character and with some situations in it. It made me look things differently, from another… -

Bland & unlikable characters inhabit a dull & uninteresting world, trying to pass off cliches and moping as being profound and deep.
The moral is nothing more than 'don't bother with school work, as you can doss it out at the very last minute.' Realistic, I guess, but a world better avoided.
