Returning for the first time after a seven year hiatus, after their last film of 2001's "FROM HELL" ... the Hughes Bros. return with a remarkable, exquisite, and overall powerful opus in "THE BOOK OF ELI". A film rich with outstanding cinematography ... two excellent performances from our two leading men ... and a finale that will blow your mind away, "THE BOOK OF ELI" takes the audience on an adventure through a futuristic apocalyptic world, that culminates with an intelligent and powerful ending that is bound to inspire not only debate and discussion, but deep soul-searching as well. "THE BOOK OF ELI" is an excellent piece of filmmaking, that needs to be checked… -
I've slept on this film since it came out in 2010. It received mostly middle of the road to bad reviews from critics so I just never watched it. After joining Letterboxd over a year ago now, I read some reviews that encouraged me to give it a chance.
Right from the beginning I was into it. First the visual style and look of the post apocalyptic world grabbed my attention. Then Denzel comes along all bad ass and shit further peaking my interest. Eli (Denzel Washington) is what people call a "walker". He's traveling the bleak post apocalyptic world heading west for reasons only known to him. Upon stopping in a town, and being forced to use his bad…

This bleached-out and literate post-apocalyptic traveler's tale supplies a strong vehicle for its leads, Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. It's a solid and smart action picture.

It just felt like Christian propaganda.

I finally got around to seeing this film for the second time. Its a movie that needs to be seen twice to pick up on subtle things that you may have missed the first time. But don't let that stop you from seeing it the first time. Now that I have watched it again, it has moved itself up into one of my favorites. It is a movie that I can watch over and over, plus recommend to everyone.
The best thing about The Book of Eli is the cinematography by Don Burgess. Most other post-apocalyptic movies tend to wash out or use to many grey tones to express the bleakness of the world. Burgess uses sepia tones as others…

A thought provoking and exceptionally acted film.

Action, steady plot, nice balance of genres. Gary Oldman is an effective villain. Also, really enjoyed the color palette and score for the film. There are several points in the second and third acts which could be tightened up, but overall the picture is well made.

¨I fought the good fight, I finished the race, I kept the faith.¨
The last movie the Hughes brothers had directed was From Hell back in 2001 with Johnny Depp. After being absent for 9 years they are back directing this sci-fi post- apocalyptic epic movie starring Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, and Mila Kunis. The wait was well worth it because twin brothers Albert and Allen have made one of the best movies of the year so far. The cinematography is just beautiful with mostly black and white colors predominating in every scene. The story is also very intriguing thanks to a great performance from Denzel Washington who is one of the best actors in the business. For the first…

Two hours of warmed-over post-apocalyptic cliches slathered in a dollop of hokey, faith-is-all-you-need spiritualism. And then there's a twist ending that the movie comes nowhere close to selling.

Con base argumental y resolución pobre, me parece bastante aburrida en lineas generales. Aún así, para un ratejo, está potable.

A preachy film suggesting that true faith is within one's self. I liked the cinematography, the score, and Denzel's performance. The message is clear, and I would tend to think that the religious and spiritual among us will enjoy this film much more than I did.
