The Bounty
1984 Directed by Roger Donaldson
Synopsis
The familiar story of Lieutenant Bligh, whose cruelty leads to a mutiny on his ship. This version follows both the efforts of Fletcher Christian to get his men beyond the reach of British retribution, and the epic voyage of Lieutenant Bligh to get his loyalists safely to East Timor in a tiny lifeboat.

I am dumbfounded at how I have never heard of this movie, look at this cast. I had The Bounty on my DVR for a few weeks so I watched it today and I was shockingly surprised at how good this film is. This is a must see, it is the story of a British ship named The Bounty and what the crew and it's captain go through. They initially set sail from Britain in December 1787 for the Pacific island of Tahiti to gather breadfruit pods for transplantation in the Caribbean but mutiny strikes the crew. I went into this knowing nothing but that it was a classic sea story, so if you have not seen this and are interested just watch it I think you will enjoy the story. It's definitely worth the buy.

Old-fashioned in many ways, but I really like this one. As depicted here, it isn't really believable that Christian and Bligh would be friends, but Hopkins' sweaty, repressed insecurity and possible latent-homosexual panic are perfect. I suppose this was about the last chance you'd have to tell this story in such a doggedly (mostly) historical fashion, too. Plus the creepy Vangelis score. Plus plus a supremely dour young Daniel Day-Lewis. I wonder if he got on everyone else's nerves, some young nobody actor being all Method-y out in the middle of nowhere for months.

Not even the anachronistic-yet-deeply-evocative Vangelis can dim the intense ambition of this marvel

Familiar mutiny on the high seas tale still has commendable vigor and fiery performances going for it you don't often witness, especially nowadays (plus unlike Brando, Hopkins' Bligh doesn't sound like Jack Sparrow). The natives on the island have never really dug themselves out of tourist diversion, narrative-stalling status. (85%)

This was quite a cast with Hopkins and Gibson, but with notables like Sir Laurence Olivier, Edward Fox, Liam Neeson, and Daniel Day-Lewis in supporting roles.
I don't know if all the components of this works exactly as it probably did on paper. This is a bit of a different take on the old Mutiny story. Bligh and Christian are supposed to be friends, mainly because there was one scene in the beginning to establish the idea, and then there is the age difference to make it all seem contrived. one thing that is bothersome too is that Bligh is portrayed as an ok guy but then turns more malevolent as time goes on. GIbson is an even weaker link coming off as merely spoiled.
The real standouts might be Vangelis and Tahiti itself. I would love to see this come out on blu, ray.

A fair enough effort, but here is my feature on the attempt by David Lean to make an epic two part film about the Bounty story, which eventually morphed into this: Trouble In Paradise: David lean's Bounty cinetropolis.net/?p=307
