The Bourne Identity
2002 Directed by Doug Liman
Synopsis
He was the perfect weapon until he became the target.
Wounded to the brink of death and suffering from amnesia, Jason Bourne is rescued at sea by a fisherman. With nothing to go on but a Swiss bank account number, he starts to reconstruct his life, but finds that many people he encounters want him dead. Bourne realizes, though, that he has the combat and mental skills of a world-class spy, but who does he work for?

This is a solid film and my favourite of the three starring Damon.
This mainly has to do with the fact that I hate the shaky cam aesthetic of the Greengrass sequels. See, action is all about kinetics and Liman understands that you can get great, intense visualization of combat by using clever editing as opposed to shaking the camera all the time to try and achieve the frenetic effect of hand to hand combat.
The action is great and the plot unravels nicely. The cast, most notably Damon, is excellent. If Liman had managed to keep Clive Owen's mouth shut for the entire running time, this would easily have been a five star film.
It is simply a well told, exciting action film that excels in grounding its story in realism but falters in being truly original anywhere else.

This is roughly the millionth time I've seen this and it still manages to be as good as the first watch. Matt Damon is great as what is probably one the defining action heroes of the 21st century (so far) and then you've got Brian Cox who's always pretty good in anything he does.
But the main thing here is of course the action. Bourne punches, kicks and breaks the limbs of nearly everyone he meets (kinda justified since everyone is trying to kill him), and stabs a guy with a pen at one point, technically making this Taken's slightly smug older brother. And the Mini Cooper car chase is still one of the most awesome moments on film. That made it sound like another generic action film didn't it? It isn't though. I promise.

The first in the celebrated Jason Bourne franchise, in hindsight, feels like almost a different affair to the ensuing movies. The Bourne Identity has very much a beginning, middle and end to a story that has expanded significantly over time and thats the most surprising thing looking back, how closed it all ties up to be. Along the way Doug Liman delivers a multitude of well-executed action set pieces, backed up by an intriguing narrative and a dynamic everyman meets action hero performance by Matt Damon.
Identity is probably the closest to Robert Ludlum's source material, the adaptations subsequently barely touching what actually formed his novels, but the story here remains Damon's amnesiac assassin steadily coming to learn of his…

I forgot how badass Damon is in this.

Jason Bourne is what we always wished Bond would be like. This is a super stylish spy thriller that must be seen. It's full of ultra realistic performances, amazing locations and twists and turns. We follow Jason Bourne as he pieces together his forgotten past. Excellent.

The Bourne Identity is by all means a rounded film, there is potential for a sequel (Evidenced by actual sequels, duh!) but the film actually ends up feeling like a stand-alone action thriller. And probably because of many reasons, this seems to be the case.
Jason Bourne is a super motherfucking agent who gets shot, gets saved by a few fisherman and suffers from amnesia, completely forgetting why it happened, and what actually did happen. His only clue is a bank in Switzerland. Of course, he goes there!!
He meets Matt Damon look-a-like Franka Potente (Marie) and yay, they become friends (lovers) and have fun.
The Bourne Identity is a solid action film that has that puppet from Team America in it. MAAAATT DAMONNNN

Es ist mal wieder Zeit für die Trilogie. Der Auftakt ist sehr gelungen und ein toller Agententhriller mit guter Action. Wunderbar.

This is my favourite of the trilogy. I remember being totally shocked not only by how much I enjoyed the movie, but by how good Matt Damon was in the movie. Up until that point, I only ever thought of him as "that actor who vaguely resembles a bulldog", now he's one of People Magazine's Sexiest Men of the Year - the world is a crazy place.

Definitely a gripping thriller. A bit confusing at times, but I'm not one for thrillers to begin with.
