why do all of laika’s white boy leads highkey look like timothée chalamet??? laika EXPLAIN
The stop-motion animation tale of a boy named Eggs who's raised by a group of trolls who enjoy dressing up in boxes. Creepy as no other laugh. Sewers are a fantastic place to hide. Just ask the Ninja Turtles. Dead teddy. Awful teeth. Mr. Pickles? Troll kick. The Boxtrolls's home reminds me of Fraggle Rock. Tarzan thump. Seesaw fun. Baby Boxtrolls look kinda weird. Vinyl record players ain't no joke. Dodge bug. The Exterminators are sorta like the Bootleg Ghostbusters. Who the fuck sniffs cheese? Why the fuck are the rich folk obsessed with cheese? Do you sniff cheese? Snatcher is a mean motherfucker. He's voiced brilliantly by Sir Ben Kingsley. It's Ben's second most menacing role next to Don…
I'm forced to sympathize with the villain given that he is the only movie character I'm aware of that evidently shares my serious dairy allergy.
The Boxtrolls is a very creative and likable film, with a lot of sweet moments. It made me smile on more than one occasion. Laika is really onto something here. While The Boxtrolls isn't quite as good as ParaNorman or Coraline, it's a very solid entry into what's becoming a great animated company! I can't wait to see what they come up with next.
A film that didn't particularly interest me, but I watched it nonetheless because it was required viewing in my quest to watch all of Laika's features.
And the boxtrolls in question are undeniably distinct, not only in appearance but also in behavior. I was reminded favorably of Selick's and Burton's work, particularly in the design of the town and the personalities, with the villain resembling Timothy Spall (or was that just me?).
Eggs made for a nice main character, but he shared Po's flaw of failing to immediately recognize how different he and the boxtrolls are. Winnie was a nice, precocious co-lead, but she was also very aggravating in many ways. The villain was likewise fine, albeit a little generic and over-the-top for my taste.
All in all, pretty amusing but far from the studio's best.

an amusing commentary about the absurdity of class-defining societal constructs. and yet i’d love to be the mayor in a cheese-based society.
The fact that nobody realizes how based this movie is quite shocking actually. The commentary is off the chain, destroys fascism, destroys the fabric that we build our world on, it's kooky and weird af, it indulges in various kinks and obscenities that draw you in rather than you repulse you (Winnie is like the most depraved, crazy, sadistic but wholesome character and she fucking rocks), gender obscurification, trans rights, the concept of being human shown for the construct that it is, birthing a new form of life, a new way of thinking. If ParaNorman was the usurping of normality into weird than this is the train going full throttle into weird town, nothing is off limits, everything is blunt…
From the creators of Coraline & ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls is the latest feature from Laika which is once again affectionately crafted, exquisitely animated & wonderfully told but compared to the studio's previous two efforts, it's an underwhelming experience on the whole scale. It's no less enjoyable or entertaining & promises a good time but unlike those two, is certainly not a memorable story.
Based on Alan Snow's children's novel Here Be Monsters, the story takes place in the fictional town of Cheesebridge and concerns a young orphaned boy named Eggs who was raised by underground cave-dwelling, trash collecting trolls whom he tries to save from Archibald Snatcher; a pest terminator, and in the process ends up discovering his origins.
Well written & neatly directed,…
Of all the Laika films, this had been the one that I was least interested in but at the end of the day it turned out to be another big yEs from me to the studio. THEY JUST CANT MISS.
This movie was so wholesome from start to finish. I remember when I saw the trailer of this movie on theaters when it was about to come out and I thought that the boxtrolls were fucking terrifying, nothing further from the truth. The boxtrolls stole my heart, despite the movie mainly focused in Shoe and Fish, I literally was anxious the entire time because I didn’t want anything bad to happen to ANY of this little creatures. Their relationship with…
"Here come the exterminators... of justice! We exterminate justice!!"
The Boxtrolls tells the story of Eggs, a boy raised from infancy by a community of trolls who live underground in boxes. Lord Portley-Rind opens Pandora's box when he hires Archibald Snatcher to rid Cheesebridge of its boxtroll infestation, and the group finds itself suddenly boxed in. Eggs must think outside the box and use his entire box of tricks or he and his friends will go home in a box. Boxtrolls box with box-boxers who seek to box the boxes in a box.
Okay sorry, I'm done.
The Boxtrolls, like Laika's other stop-motion features, looks absolutely incredible. Not only is the claymated world impressively detailed, it's also skillfully brought to…
Yet another children's movie that's terrifying when viewed through a sickly, medicated haze.
