It would appear that certain fads seem to go in cycles, with 3-D a short lived phenomenon in the early 1950's, before it re-emerged briefly in the 1980's when The Mouse Company tinkered with new technology that spawned the short film Captain EO, which I actually saw when I visited the EPCOT Centre in Orlando in the early 1990's. The quest for more box office dollars saw another revival in the 00's, and the chance to add an extra couple of quid to the admission price proved lucrative for a spell before nosediving as viewers quickly got bored of the format. The likes of IMAX offered a better viewing experience, and 3-D's revival seems to disappeared yet again, although I'm…
Ein nicht besonders guter Western. Allenfalls Durchschnitt. Da sind einige gewöhnungsbedürftige Szenen und Kameraeinstellungen dabei, hauptsächlich bei den Kämpfen mit den Sioux-Indianern.
"The Charge at Feather River" is an action-packed but never exciting western. Something happens all the time and the characters hardly come to rest, but a feeling of excitement or tension never really arises because the film is staged too dryly. Another reason for this is that you don't really care about the characters and you never worry about them. A few of the large group are briefly characterized and some have character traits or goals that draw their way through the film, but a film like "The Magnificent Seven" manages to introduce the characters to me a lot better and to bring them closer to me. Still, I don't think the film is particularly bad, it is just nothing special and totally mediocre.
Gordon Douglas’s western involves an overland journey through hostile Cheyenne territory to rescue two white women captured by the Cheyenne. With Guy Madison and Frank Lovejoy.
The story concentrates on a cavalry that has to save two ladies who have been captured by the Cheyenne. The only way the cavalry can come to their liberation is through a torrent called Feather River.
Guy Madison gives a good performance in his role as Miles Archer, the man who has to be careful with himself while attempting to save the two women, while Frank Lovely is decent as Charlie Baker, the sergeant who acts like he is in charge.
Elsewhere, there are fine performances to be had from Vera Miles and Helen…
"I hate hearing the Wilhelm Scream" aww that's terrible. do you want me to get you some Soy Milk????
Westerns aren't really my thing but my in-laws can't get enough of'em. Thankfully Warner Archive Instant can be counted on to have a bunch that they've never seen. Absolute nirvana for Western aficionados.
Horribly racist Western B-Movie about a posse that sets out to rescue two Whire women from the Cheyenne. One of the women doesn’t want to leave though, and their withdrawal becomes a battle of attrition, ending at the Feather River.
It’s dull and predictable through out, and racist in all the ways you expect it to be. It’s however remarkably similar in premise to The Searchers, though that vastly better and more complicated film diverges about 2/3 in - the similarities both in plot and theme to that point, though in a small scale - are remarkable, and id put money on John Houston having seen this and having an idea.
What’s pissing these injuns off so much? It’s not like white man came uninvited to their country and proceeded to kill, rape and plunder.
“No wonder they call them savages.”
This film has the greatest sound effects ever. The bullets, the arrows, even the punches and dirtfalls sound textbookly unrealistic.
I knew nothing of The Charge at Feather River before I watched it. I watched it on TCM, I love those guys! Its a rip-roaring western with engaging characters - although I am wondering whether I am missing out not seeing it on 3D. Okay perhaps not! There are so many of these films that I haven't seen, I had a good time with this one.
