    Un western classico dalla trama complessa ma solida, sequenze spettacolari – in particolare le incursioni degli indiani - girate nella tradizionale Monument Valley, una regia composta ma adeguata al racconto e realizzata dall’anziano autore di Casablanca, pare coadiuvato da John Wayne. Quest’ultimo è straordinario nei panni di un personaggio che è il “suo”. Stuart Withman è convincente. Lee Marvin, con la testa deturpata da uno scalpo non portato a termine, cattivissimo e nervoso.
    Interessante per l’epoca anche la rappresentazione degli indiani: quelli pacifici sono comunque poveri e dimessi, altri sono resi violenti dall’alcool (che, peraltro, non reggono bene), dal fumo e dal contatto con i Comancheros.

    A rip-snorting outing with The Duke, tightly told through Michael Curtiz's classical direction. While incredibly entertaining, the story does rely too heavily on coincidence at several crucial plot turns, but the exciting spirit of the film makes it tough to be too hard on it.
