I'll keep this short because the movie doesn't really warrant me putting too much thought into it, but I still want to weigh in on the positive side of the debate over this movie. Basically, go into this not expecting to have your mind blown and you'll have a good time. Expect Pixar or the director's last few movies and you might leave disappointed.
The story treads familiar territory, but the tired tropes are executed in relatively charming and enjoyable fashion. Many of the gags and slapstick sequences are fun, the environment is colorful and beautifully animated, the creatures are wonderfully bizarre, and the key voice performers (Emma Stone and Nick Cage) are likable enough to ultimately endear you to…

I had high hopes for Dreamwork’s latest animated family film, The Croods, simply because of the involvement of director Chris Sanders. Sanders, along with Dean DeBlois, was responsible for two of the better animated features in recent years (Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon) yet DeBlois has left to work on the sequel to HTTYD leaving Sanders with a new co-director in the shape of Kirk De Micco. It would be easy to lay the blame at De Micco’s door for The Croods failings, not least because he was responsible for the abomination that was Space Chimps, but in truth everybody deserves to shoulder the responsibility for this old fashioned and flat family movie.

Not very ambitious from a storytelling viewpoint, but it was gorgeously animated and consistently entertaining. It didn't deliver the cheap, juvenile laughs I was expecting and it had quite a bit of heart. The film's message was contrived and it was a little too long, but I had a lot of fun with The Croods.

The biggest surprise of 2013 for me thus far. While "The Croods" lacks a strong and fluid narrative, it's kids animation at it's utter best. And, although I'm 18 years old (legally an adult) I'm still a kid, so I fucking loved it. It's an incredibly entertaining and sweet film, which throws laughter and joy at you in abundance. Nicholas Cage needs to stick to voice acting, because when he hasn't got that face-you-wanna-slap on screen, you can actually enjoy his presence. His character "Grug" is wildly amusing and will have you quoting him for ages. I'm not DreamWorks' biggest fan, I'm Pixar through and through, but "The Croods" is a lot of fun and I can't fault it for that. If you don't like this you lack a heart and a soul!

The Croods is an incredible experience, w/ it's beautiful, colorful and fantastic animation. It's also very latching and very entertaining. I was honestly always entertained. It's very relatable and funny characters were what basically made this movie. It also has a very creative and new story line, that I found totally interesting. It's direction is solid, take away the last 5 minutes of the film I thought the director did very well. It succeeds w/ it's witty kind of feel and very likable characters. Also Guy's swath/belt & the little elephants (Near the beginning) were hysterical.

To MrDummy566: Thanks! I am very suprised too!
To Connor Carrey: Thanks! and definitely! -
Based on the trailers, I honestly wasn't all that looking forward to The Croods. The concept looked so familar, and the jokes just didn't seem all that funny. But, after seeing a lot of positive reviews, I decided to give it a shot. And I'm really glad to say this is easily one of my favorite movies of the year so far, and maybe the most fun I've had. What makes this movie work the most is the terrfic voice cast and amazing visuals. Even in animated form I couldn't get enough of Emma Stone, going into the film I thought her character was going to annoy me, but she was great, charming as always, and definitely fit her role.…

Takes a while to find its rhythm, but it wins you over. Nic Cage rules even as a voice actor.

An overly aggressive "family" movie, with visuals that can't decide if they want to be "real" or over-exaggerated. Strange film and a strangely unsatisfying experience.

Chris Sanders artwork was what pulled me in on this. And a love of cavemen on film. This is the first animated movie that Roger Deakins has consulted on (well, maybe Rango, too) where I can say I actually see what he did. There are some incredible wide compositions, particularly early on in the film. The sense of fun and creative anarchy when it comes to creating animals (flying turtles and land whales anyone?) wins out over some heavy-handed, theme-spelling as the film reaches its conclusion.

This is a shame. There was definitely a really good film lurking in The Croods somewhere, but this isn't it.
Whilst beautifully animated, it's never funny enough and spends most of its running time meandering around without much really happening. Most of the voice cast, with the exception of Emma Stone, are merely going through the motions and never imbue their roles with any real character.
Only the breath-taking scale of the final act makes The Croods worth watching because, not only is it beautiful, but out of nowhere, it manages to find a heart.

Good light hearted fun, with some nice frenetic action sequences containing some very inventive 'camerawork'. Lovely animation with a Sweet story about family and the relationship between father & daughter.

Saw with the kids last night. It thought pretty well executed. Reminded me a little of Ice Age.

Nick Cage's best performance.

A great animated family adventure-drama that is funny and touching and lovely. The animation is spectacular and unexpected. The story is fresh.
