The Crucible by Arthur Miller is comprised of four acts, each with one scene, located in four different locations total. If only this long-awaited adaptation would have embraced such restraint. Instead Nicholas Hytner shows too much which results in the entire film becoming a rushed mess.
Telling the story of the town of Salem, Massachusetts as it is torn apart by paranoia and lies due to a group of young girls caught dancing in the woods claiming they were possessed by the Devil. Abigail Williams leads the way, using her skill for embittered deception to condemn people. Winona Ryder plays Abigail and her performance is one of the film's weak points. She captures the look of the role, but not…

Good actors, good script, lots of tense scenes -- but way too long of a running time and a bit too sensationalized for me. I wanted to pull my own hair out in the court scenes where all the girls start screaming, I guess that's a good thing because I was engaged in the film, but in the end this film left me bitter.
I mean, without getting all "hoity-toity" that I luckily(?) happened to take a history unit and know some the context, I think the film would've benefited with a scene of one of the afflicted girls (Ann, I think it was) standing up a few years later in church and saying sorry for being a bunch of…

Arthur Miller's 1952 play The Crucible shocked millions when it premiered, comparing McCarthyism with the real life Salem witch trials, which ended with the unfair execution of almost twenty people. In my english class, I read The Crucible as part of a lesson. While reading I fell in love with the story, and decided to see the film.
The 1996 film begins with the girls of Salem village travelling into the woods carrying strange packages. Together in the woods they conjure a spell to bewitch the men they have interest in to love them. But the night goes a bit awry when the village minister finds them dancing in the woods. The next morning, the minister's daughter, Betty, as well… -
"The Crucible" was a very weird film which seemed to be about witches although that was unclear. Based on a play, the movie should've just stuck to a play in my opinion. The only redeeming feature of this movie was an appearance by a doctor, who may have not been a doctor, who looked like Gene Wilder, although he may have actually been Gene Wilder (hang on, he's definitely not Gene Wilder). As you can see this movie was quite confusing, as is this review. Anyway to sum up, this movie is probably about witches who may or may not be burnt for a crime they may or may not have committed with an old lady who may or may not have been a gypsy. So yeah.

I did'nt care much for the play and I care about this a little less. Daniel Day Lewis is excellent and others come off as pretty great. The atmosphere is good and it is pretty faithful to the source material. Problem is some things just don't work on screen. What seems plausible when left to the imagination from reading it looks ridiculous, convuluted, and has some plot holes when you watch it on screen. It also comes off as laughably melodramatic at points. There are a lot of scenes you just can't take serious. There's a lot that really hurts the film, but the atmosphere and acting make up for some of it.

One of the finest plays in history is remarkably turned into one of the finest films of the '90s. Arthur Miller's original story is one of power and the terrible nature of society on two fronts. First, it tackles the inner struggle of a morally strong man who's emotions get the better of him and the girl who will do anything to have him be her's forever. Secondly, it displays the flaws of the government and society in general, and how one person's claim can corrupt an entire town. It's a stunning take on the foolishness and utterly unbelievable nature of a topic that dates back to the Salem Witch Trials, McCarthyism and is even poignant today in terms of…

A well acted faithful film adaption of the play, the 1996 version of the Crucible is entertaining and full of the complete and utter madness of the Salem Witch Trials. Also something about Winona Ryder yelling and screaming is very attractive. It had to be said.

The Crucible is a enthralling, frenzied and often thought-provoking film about the power of rumors and fear; that is, when the film works. That being said, there are a number of factors in the film that don't work, such as a stolid script from Arthur Miller (adapted from his classic play) that never translates into a big screen screed, and a rare misstep from Daniel Day-Lewis, who seems to be at a loss in times to accurately portray his character's indecision and panic. Thankfully we have an extraordinarily good Winona Ryder, who's perfect as the catalyst for the town's unraveling and a wonderful Joan Allen, who received a much-deserved Oscar nomination as the perpetually broken wife trying to keep her…

After sitting through this gloom fest I realised I need to be more aggressive in my ratings of films. This film fully deserves each and every one of its four stars for its sheer cheerlessness and chilling drama

If you've ever listened to the cassette or CD of the book reading and didn't think the characters could get anymore annoying, just watch this movie. I dare you.
Not all the characters were annoying; like the Proctors, their servant, the judge, and Giles, but everyone else was annoying. If you thought Jar Jar from Star Wars was annoying, just meet Winona Ryder as Abigail.
I'm not one of the huge fans of the play, but this film doesn't really show any justice until Hytner and Miller allow DDL and Allen to shine at the end. DDL doesn't ever disappoint me, both he and Allen are the saving grace(s) of this film. The film doesn't really have any huge fatal…
