Do you remember that special time when zombies didn't have to be nazis for them to interest you? That time when their sheer number was a threat rather than their ability to pile on top of one another to attack helicopters? That time when they were scary even when they couldn't run like olympians on meth?
Maybe I've just become an elitist hipster getting all pissy now that zombies are everybody's favorite pass-time, but I much prefer to think that zombie movies and novels and comics simply saturated long ago. Despite this saturation, that rare jewel invariably makes itself a diamond in the rough.
The Dead may not have the social commentary you'd find in Romero's work, but the strength…

Dull African zombie film which starts at a canter with some great, gore-heavy scenes before settling into a pattern of going nowhere, slowly.
Characters are developed in a rather half-hearted, off-hand manner and if the aim was for a light, naturalistic feel then it fails. The script is banal, seemingly stuck in a pattern of 'have protagonist go somewhere, sudden zombie attack, go somewhere, SUDDEN ZOMBIE ATTACK.... go somewhere', and it's all a colossal shame as the cinematography is great with the African landscape used very well throughout. The rest is monotonous and fairly routine.
You’d have thought the zombie genre to be fairly rich with allegorical possibilities. ‘Night of the Living Dead’ was famously seen as a cinematic working…

I saw The Dead at Fantastic Fest 2010 and really really liked it. But the flaws of the thing really start to seep through upon a second viewing. (Maybe they were obvious to a lot of you on the first viewing, too). While there are CLEARLY some amazing visuals (how could there not be in an essentially Romero-rules zombie story shot in Saharan Africa?), there are some really flat performances in the film, not the least of which is the lead character.
I would've loved to see this film be one featuring African zombies and starring an African lead, too.
Look, I still like the movie. It has a grim beauty that works for me. But in the end it isn't a very good film as a whole.

An American gets on the last plane evacuating a Zombie apocalypse in Africa only for the plane to crash just off the coast thus dropping him right back in the middle of the mayhem and death. A fight for survival begins in a land where he knowns no-one and only has a vague sense of where he needs to go for salvation and escape.
This film is a real treat. For a start the scenery is trully breathtaking however the things I Ioved the most about this film was firstly the unflinching brutality of the death scenes which took me right back to the zombies in Romeros classic "Night of the living dead". Secondly I loved the genuine sense of…

A low budget Romero-style Zombie road movie through Africa, is clearly not for everyone.
I rather enjoyed the scenery and the slow desperation the lead actor feels while traveling into no-mans land.

This film from the UK is a zombie movie that is kind of different from the ones I'm used to seeing.
For one reason, it's got an almost all black cast. It's set in an African country torn apart by civil war; America is providing support services. But when a zombie outbreak occurs, the Americans all leave - except for one Air Force engineer that gets left behind.
The American joins up with an African soldier looking for his son, and together they make their way across the land, surviving and holding on to hope.
It's not a scary movie. This is partly because these aren't the fast kind of zombies, so nobody is scared of them. You can usually…

Zombies in Africa!!!!!
Cracking film reminiscent of Romero due to the hopelessness and incessant wave after wave of shambling undead

In Africa, a war has broken out causing American soldiers and doctors to be over there. When a zombie outbreak occurs, the war stops and most people try to leave. One man, Brian, is not so lucky when his plane crashes after just taking off. Brian soon meets up with Daniel, who's son is missing. They team up in hopes to find Daniel’s son and a plane to leave the continent.
The first half hour is absolutely stellar in The Dead. It is fast paced, suspense filled, and I dare to say original in the opening scene. The Dead reminded me of Lucio Fulci’s Zombie because of its African setting.
Unfortunately, the filmmakers must have lost their creative juices because the last hour is soo slow. The movie also suffers from having the characters make poor choices and some of their outcomes to be disappointing.
Ultimately, The Dead is just forgettable zombie movie junk that had potential.

"We're all dead anyway." Brian Murphy
Love the genre, hate this movie, and here’s why: The Dead is Exhibit A for those who wonder what a boring zombie movie would look like.
In the interest of saving you needless pain and suffering, I’m going to tell you how the story works:
1. Main character travels.
2. Main character nearly gets killed by zombies.
3. Main character kills zombies (and looks like a buffoon while doing it).
4. Repeat ad nauseam.Few thrills and no chills are generated by this formula, and it was all I could do to keep myself from falling asleep. I put tape on my eyelids. I did jumping jacks. I sat on tacs. I even ate…
