I like a good submarine movie - and this was one of a substantial list of them in the 1950s. Although I slightly prefer the edgier "Run Silent, Run Deep" from the following year where the above and below water combatant's roles are reversed, Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens make a good pairing as the US Destroyer and German U-Boat captains testing each others strategic skills in the Southern Atlantic. What really works is the location shooting on board a real Destroyer, and the choice to make the protagonists equals and not sway the plot into a standard Allied flag wave: the German is no sneering Nazi, but a disciplined, respectful patriot eager to get his job done and get…

Mitchum is great in this as the quiet self-effacing captain who is newly assigned to the ship and through simple competence, and quiet self-assurance gains the respect of the crew. Curt Jurgens is amazing as the German U-Boat Captain who bemoans the loss of pride and glory in what it is that they do.

"An American destroyer escort captain has a battle with the captain of a U-boat - who will sink whom first?"

Good thriller with an American Destroyer and a German Submarine fighting each other. Both captains are very good and it quickly turns into a game of cat and mouse... but who will ultimately win?

Spannend und angenehm unparteiisch.

The captains of a US destroyer and a U-boat, troll each other in a war that neither one of them seem to want. Pretty good depiction of the germans for a Hollywood film, though the realism of the U-boat would later be smashed by Das Boot. The film is worth a watch for the thick tension between the captains/crew, and the impressive final confrontation.

Taut and tense naval drama.
