A masterpiece from start to finish. It's almost like you are watching two films in one because of the long stretchs of flashbacks by the Count. Love is always an interesting theme to have within a film, but can easily be messed up if you don't give enough or go overboard and make it unbelieveable.
This historical backdrop makes it possible to love this film even more. I believe when set in a time such as the 1940's you are able to create so many different stories just because of the history that surround this time. This love affair is seen from miles away and you understand that love conquers all even if death reaches you first.
The cast, editing and cinematography capture the film in such a way that it becomes something to be treatured. A film for the ages. -
This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Just watched The English Patient for the first time. Man... who voted for that to win Best Picture of 1996 over Fargo?
Good, very good romance movie. Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas are great in the movie. As is everyone involved in their story in the desert. It's pure David Lean. A true epic.
But just about EVERYTHING involving Juliette Binoche's nurse character was the reason this movie is so often labeled as an overlong boring movie.
As so wonderfully illustrated by Elaine in Seinfeld:
"Stop telling your stupid story about the stupid desert and just DIE already! DIE!!!"
The entire subplot involving the bomb disposal guy played Naveen Andrews could have SO easily removed from the film without…

The first half of the movie didn´t really hooked me. There was something being held to the end, I expected. With powerfull performances from Fiennes and Binoche, the third act not only get me: it actually put myself on my knees contemplating one of the most touching scenes I saw in years.

A deeply engrossing and glorious war-torn tragic romance. Unfairly maligned, with outstanding direction and brilliant performances from Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Juliette Binoche.

Too boring to be this long and still have so much unexplained.

It has become fashionable to rip on The English Patient over time since its release in 1996. This can be blamed on two things. One of them is Seinfeld, with the image of Elaine screaming at the television because of the movie's length coming to mind, and the other is that it won the Academy Award for Best Picture in a very good year for film, particularly for beating out Fargo. Although Fargo is the better film in my opinion, this one is not without its merits.
For one, I love how the screenplay, like the novel it's based on, carefully peels back the layers of this complex story. Because of all these layers, it really rewards a second viewing…

Ralph Fiennes' and Juliette Binoche's acting is what makes this film so great. And the cinematography. And Anthony Minghella's directing.
The story in general... meh.
For me this movie is like Avatar; seen-it-before-story, but love the film nevertheless. -
This movie was not what I expected. I was expecting a boring, war movie. I turned out to be exactly the opposite of what I though. It was amazing, with a moving story. A story of romance and drama that it shown through flashbacks of a burn victim to his nurse. The story of him and his affair with a married women in Cairo,Egypt while the Germans and British were fighting. A touching story, which is added to movies that have made me cry. A three hour movie which I am surprised to ever say about a three hour movie, I would watch again.
