This really is an epic film. I haven't seen a silent film this great since Battleship Potemkin. Obviously the story is great. A train engineer gets shunned by those close to him but has something to fight for when his train is stolen, with his fiancée still on it. Not only this but he has to warn the south about an appending attack from the north. It's just a really great story and Buster Keaton is an amazing actor. But…

This film really is perfect. I have enjoyed Buster Keaton's films but I am not a fan of the slap stick comedy in all of his films. This film has almost eveything that I want in a film with the action, adventure, some comedy and romance. This is my favorite Buster Keaton film. I even enjoyed it more that Sherlock Jr.

My goodness what an incredible movie. I knew the train/bridge scene existed but it was even more incredible then I could have imagined. The story was genuinely funny and Keaton was at the height of his game on this one.

Funnier than Sherlock, Jr. and just as good. I got to see this projected at an old cinema in Edmonton. Wasn't from a print but the Kino DVD Im assuming or the Blu Ray if they have one out. Amazing music in the film. No question about it's masterpiece status.

One of the many reasons why I love old silent movies is that I know, without a doubt, that everything I am seeing is real. Made long before the invention of the visual effects that supersaturate modern movies, "The General" presents Buster Keaton performing awe-inspiring stunts on a moving locomotive, while retaining the lighthearted romantic side that Keaton did so well
