It's two o'clock in the morning here, and that means that it is officially Easter. Now, Easter has always been a big part of my family, and the holiday was always synonymous with large family gatherings.
What does this have to do with The Godfather? Well, not a whole lot. But I finally picked up the Coppola restoration on BluRay and I decided that this Easter I was going to have a little marathon. I'm going to spend the holiday with one of the most famous families in American media. No, not the Simpsons. And no, not the cancerous Kardashians.
I'm talking about the Corleones baby.
This film is one of the greatest gems of American film, and world cinema…

Perfect in every way, which goes without saying, but something struck me this time around that I hadn't really thought about before: What is it, exactly, that draws Michael to this life so irresistibly? We never see him enjoying the power being Godfather affords him, in fact we never see him enjoying much of anything once he joins the family business except for his time hiding in Italy. Leaving that mystery unexplained (and thus subject to endless rumination) might be this movie's masterstroke.

I hate long films. We know this. It's not that I disliked The Godfather, it's just that I got bored with it very easily. It's a brilliantly in-depth look at the mafia, and probably one of the most realistic and honest dramas about an Italian crime family there will ever be. That being said, I like my films to entertain me; The Godfather didn't do that.
Say what you will.

Did you know that George Lucas helped Francis Ford Coppola shoot and finish The Godfather? He actually shot a few things, like the newspaper shots. He even taught Coppola a few filmmaking tips about building suspense.
So every time you call George Lucas a fat idiot cunt who nuked the fridge or jumped the shark or sold out, just remember he had more than a little something to do with arguably the greatest American picture ever filmed (literally).

this is what the 5 star movie is supposed to look like. everything is brilliant. i have seen this, and part 2, multiple times. part 2 was my favorite for a long time, but i think i definitely prefer part one now. marlon brando was on point.
after this, i feel like going back and giving some of my 5 star movies a 4.5.

One of the pinacles of American cinema, The Godfather is unmatched in its genre and cotton wool balls acting. In fact, I would go as far as to say that this film has the greatest performance by any actor with cotton wool balls stuffed into his mouth.

Rich, resonant, very well-acted drama. For me, no film has succeeded in blurring the line between fiction and reality as completely as this one. Marlon Brando creates an unforgettable character. Filled with great scenes, artful images, and memorable music.
