The Great Escape
1963 Directed by John Sturges
Synopsis
Put a fence in front of these men...and they'll climb it...
The Nazis, exasperated at the number of escapes from their prison camps by a relatively small number of Allied prisoners, relocates them to a high-security "escape-proof" camp to sit out the remainder of the war. Undaunted, the prisoners plan one of the most ambitious escape attempts of World War II. Based on a true story.

One of those films that you don't quite appreciate until you're actually sitting down and watching it. It's possibly the best big cast film ever (even if some, like Coburn and Bronson, weren't as their peak just yet), giving a surprising amount of actors the time and space to turn in fine performances without everyone trying to upstage everyone else.
Some of the set pieces look a bit cliched now just because of their fame, but this is still the biggest and best Boy's Own story ever made.

It's EASILY the most entertaining WW2 film for me...a CLASSIC!!!

Just watched this for the first time tonight and despite having a DVD copy with a transfer far below quality standards, I couldn't help but be massively entertained and blown away by this amazingly fun film.
This is almost one of those movies that it hard to believe anyone not enjoying. The cast is superb, there are gags galore, and when necessary the tension is absolutely palpable. This is classic escapist cinema and can't wait to watch it again...preferably a restored version though of course.

A very involving picture about the difficulty of success in a war effort. Sturges keeps what is mostly a one-location movie thoroughly involving and fresh, reminding us how trapped we are while still hinting at an idea of freedom, only to make that freedom far more exciting than we could have expected.

Neskatoties uz kara fonu, ļoti jautra un dzīvespriecīga filma, par kuras augsto kvalitāti jau liecina neatslābstošā interese vērojot daudzos tēlus un to rotaļām līdzīgās izbēgšanas izdarības gandrīz 3h garajā filmā.

It's all fun and games until the Nazis catch you trying to escape.
I love the hopeful, defiant music in the face of the disheartening conclusion. What an incredible telling of a remarkable story.

Amazing

Its like a world war two Chicken Run. All jokes aside this film, time and time again it comes down to it, is just simple good story telling. Its a great true story, that is told well. Amazing to think that they started production with a unfinished script and finished with this film. Apart from its complete miss to the reference of D Day (unless I missed it) this film is near perfect. I know its good when I stop thinking about the film and just get sucked in. Get tense, feel nervous, am given the freedom to think as an audience member. Its greatness is in its simplicity and its recreation of a great story. GREAT.

Oh this movie is so fun! Silly! Great Music! Great Lines! It’s funny, it’s smart, it’s tricky and lighthearted! Comedy, comedy, comedy! Hahahahah!!!….
…And then it’s really sad. And that is really confusing.

This film is a classic and everyone who's anyone should see it at least once, if not three times.
