All you need to know is that Liam Neeson calls a wolf a motherfucker and punches it repeatedly in the face.

This is so much more than just men killing wolves . . this is so much more . . A man's unrelenting hope for survival and his basic discontent and displeasure with God.
Liam Neeson screams in anger"Fuck faith, earn it."
I would give 4 stars for that alone.

Damn, this one knocked the wind out of me.
I expected to see a well-crafted action flick and I did. What I didn't expect was that it would be intelligent as well. The storyline isn't really original, but it's what is between the lines that makes this film extraordinary. This isn't merely a story about survival, it's also about what gives people their purpose in life. It asks questions about faith and doesn't provide any easy answers.
At the centre of all this is Neeson's character. This is by far the best performance I have seen from Neeson. His character is burdened, on the brink of death and really doesn't have anything to live for (the reason for this only… -
Once more into the fray. Into the last good fight I'll ever know. Live and die on this day. Live and die on this day.
-OttwayI took my sweet time finally watching this film because I thought it was just The Edge with wolves instead of a bear. The fact that the last movie that Joe Carnahan directed was The A-Team also didn't make me rush out to the theater to see this. I say that without actually having viewed The A-Team by the way. This film exceeded my expectations in every way possible.
The movie isn't even really about the wolves. The film's true theme is death. How an individual deals with all aspects of death. I realized…

I was totally blown away by The Grey. I suspected there was a little more to it beyond "Liam Neeson punching wolves". What I got was an intense survival-thriller that on many occasions excels beyond the expectations of this sub-genre. The film is about death, and it handles this was grace and poignancy. It also has one of the best endings in a good while. A wonderful surprise that looks to be this year's 'The Descent', 'Ravenous', 'Attack the Block', etc.

Intellectually offensive, but some shots were nice I suppose.

Joe Carnahan puts his post-NARC career back on course with the effective and unexpectedly spiritual THE GREY, starring his A-TEAM lead Liam Neeson as another alpha male thrown into a life-or-death situation. Here, Neeson keeps his Irish brogue to play suicidal John Ottway, a hunter employed to kill the wolves that endanger an oil team in Alaska. Then, one fateful night during a blizzard, Ottway becomes one of seven drillers to survive a plane crash on their way home. Stranded in the snowy wilderness with little hope of rescue, Ottway takes charge to keep the men alive and get to safety, which becomes particularly difficult when the survivors realise they've attracted the attention of a vicious and persistent pack of…

Although highly predictable, I enjoyed this film not so much for the script/plot but for how the film was made. The great use of light and sound totally won me over. It was very well done.

Transcends from a standard action/survival film with a brilliant final coda. Anyone else making a film about man trying to overcome impossible odds take note.

There are times when The Grey is very formulaic and unoriginal and times when it breaks away and surprises, just a shame that overall I found it as bleak and empty as the snowy wastes they crashed in.

Fuck faith! Earn it!
